Ok, so what are my options for good beer in (way) Upstate NY? Will be in Malone, NY (again) around 4th of July, and only good options seem to be Supermarkets or the 45 minute trek to Lake Placid. Anyone have some enlightenment? Thanks, Pete
Subscribed. I just camped up in Elizabethtown (which is still an hour and a half south of where you're staying) and I brought all my beer because I wasn't expecting much in the way of selection up that far North. Hit up VT on the way up for a case of Heady. Interested to see what others have to say.
I'm not too familiar with that area, but when I go camping in the Speculator area in July I'll be bringing all my beer from home. I would not rely on a small grocery/general store that far up north to have what you're looking for. The most you'll find up there are a few Lake Placid brews from my experience. I agree with Fuj that you should hit up VT for some Heady on the way up north. Take 91 up to Burlington then take the ferry across for a beautiful ride and access to some great beers. If you take 90 to 87, stop in Albany and hit up Olivers or Westmere. They will have all you need for a great weekend camping. Have fun!
Personally, I'd take 138 North from Malone and cross into Quebec at Trout River and drive the 40-50 miles to Montreal area providing your passport is up to date. Lots of great Brasseries/pubs in the entertainment district. I actually stayed two nights in Malone while spectating the Valleyfield (Quebec) Hydroplane races ( 150 mph water rockets!) and commuted to the races. July 13-15 this year. Long ride to Plattsburg and Burlington VT
To the west, I've heard good things about the IGA in Potsdam (formerly a "Big M") - http://www.igapotsdam.com/potsdamiga/departments.jsp and they apparently also have a Facebook page for their craft selection.
Well, I should be careful what I say about our neighbors in the North Country of NY, but I do some work over there and have had the occasion to search for decent beer - to no avail. Then I met a couple from Malone at the old Alchemist awhile back who love good beer - and they were utterly starved for good craft over there. We laughed about a saying they said is common about Malone: "If it comes from Malone, leave it alone."
That's not so nice, my wife came from there... LOL Ok, thanks for all the input, always brought my own beer anyways, or drank Yuengling or Blue or Saranac. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out. Cheers!
I have a co-worker staying in Malone tonight and she always looks out for me (except when she is up there)....Yeah, bring your own or stop in VT or Albany.
Whenever I'm up that way I always stop in Lake Placid for growler fills at Great Adirondack and/or the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery.
I'm actually from Chateaugay originally, and yeah there's not much up there. And beyond that, Malone is really not close to anything where you'd find a better selection than in Malone—40 or so miles from Montreal, and I'm not sure how far away Lake Placid is from Malone but from my recollection it's a bit further. Luckily you're coming from MA, anyway, so if you want to stop anywhere it shouldn't be too hard from your point of origin to stop in southern VT or the NY Capital Region for something. Still, the Super Duper in Malone ought to have plenty of Saranac, Lake Placid, and maybe some Brooklyn, stuff like that. For the 4th of July, that's not exactly slumming it :-)
Stop at Nejaimes in Lenox, MA, the one on Pittsfield Rd. I can't promote this store enough and it's right on your way.
