Exactly; most DIPAs do taste the same nowadays. "Oh, what's that? Aussie/Kiwi hops? How incredibly new; let me guess, it's going to taste like tropical fruit." Seriously, I love these new hop varieties, but the unfortunate side effect is that new IPAs and DIPAs have become almost standardized and indistinguishable.

    But, back OT:

I'm looking forward to this. I'll take a Rebel over, say, Longhammer, most days, so I'm glad to have that on tap in places that often only have macro and SA tap handles. A DIPA with SA's availability and distro? Yes, please. There's little chance this will be great; little chance this will be terrible; and a great chance that it will be OK, and I'll take OK at Applebee's or some shit like that.

I also love the amount of hate SA got for calling Rebel a "West Coast Style IPA"...even though multiple craft companies (on both coasts) have done so without any backlash. Some people will use any possible excuse to bitch. (Now, whether or not it's a good West Coast Style IPA is a completely different question...)

8.4% puts it in drinkable territory.

I wanna like a SA beer. any of them! BUT... They all are horrible. I was excited about the Rebel. But was just as bad. SO... I Will try the DIPA but going in expecting it to be over promised and under delivered.

Like most other Sam Adams beers, this will probably be mediocre and underwhelming, but I'll still give it a shot. If it's even halfway decent, then at least it will probably be cheaper and more commonly available than many other, albeit better, double IPAs.

I've had it. It's decent. Nothing setting it apart from anything else. Definitely more hoppy than rebel ipa. Most should like it.

Do you know if Rebel Rouser is gonna be in six packs to compete with Rampant and Maximus or is it gonna go into 4 packs and compete with all those other 4 pack beers?

Rebel tastes like Hop water, a rubbish IPA.

Going by how the Imperial White and Double Bock are sold it will likely be in four-packs. We don't deal with any of the smaller-batch beers at the brewery where I work so I don't know for sure, but I imagine that is what will happen. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety pack somewhere down the line too. I haven't heard anything about it yet, but I'm sure that we'll be making some cases with all three of the Rebel beers at some point.

Not a big fan of Sam Adams but the Rebel IPA was pretty good IMHO. If this has Nelson Hops in it then hell yeah, count me in for a 6er.

Because what they are doing hasn't made them one of the two biggest craft brewers in the world....

I find it hard to believe, with their vast amount of resources and brewing talent, that Sam Adams couldn't brew a world-class IPA/IIPA if they really wanted to. They simply choose to make styles that are more approachable versions of what is out there. I wasn't blown away by Rebel IPA, but I'm certainly not too good to drink it and have found it plenty enjoyable when I did have one. People turning their nose up to the idea of a beer made by Sam Adams show how a section of the craft beer community have become a bit too snobbish. I understand if you don't like some of their beers, but to simply say you won't like something you haven't tried simply because it's made by Sam Adams is a bit pretentious.

I'm looking forward to trying this and hope for the best. I have found myself enjoying a good ol' Boston Lager more and more the longer I toy in the craft beer world (quite a while now). I guess the times of trying to chase whales and blow my tastebuds out of the water with the craziest sour or hoppiest IIPA is past me.

Rebel was trash. I dig some SA offerings. I will try with a cautiously optimistic mind.

I'll give it a shot if I get my hands on some. We get limited choices of Sam Adams(or anything else) where I live.

I can't get down with SA. As many times as I've offered them the benefit of the doubt, I've only returned telling myself that I should have known better. That coupled with Koch's statement about aggressively hopped IPAs (posted in this thread), takes absurdity to entirely new levels. I implore all to seek and enjoy, but I myself, will pass.

That sounds pretty good then! I'll give it a try, and I generally like DIPAs over IPAs anyway. Rebel is boring to me and I will give the Rebel Rider a shot too however, I am generally meh with session IPAs.

What is in this year's Spring packs? I searched but didn't find any info. I sure wish they'd bring Alpine Spring back. :slight_frown:

That's pretty much Jim's philosophy (or at least it still seems to be). I read it about it in an interview I several years ago, but he generally tries to brew more to style than he tries to brew extremes. Sure, a lot of beers made by Sam Adams may be pretty far from the extreme offerings of most small breweries, but that's what makes the lineup of beer produced a very approachable one to many people. I personally like to try and experience new beers when I'm out and about, but not everybody is like that, so the popularity of a lineup like that of Sam Adams is pretty reasonable.

Cold Snap, Boston Lager, Escape Route, and Crystal Pale Ale (A new American Pale). As for the formulation, I am not quite sure how the packs look yet. I haven't been in the brewery when they were making them yet. I would love to see a return of Alpine Spring, but sadly we are in the minority. That beer did not go over too well with a number of consumers (I personally thought that this would be a great summer beer).

It's being sold as Rebel Rider (at least in most markets. The session label may be due to some sales restrictions I am unaware of).

@jayrutgers hit the nail on the head. One has to go with the consumers on that point, and starting the spring line-up early was a plan to keep sales up. The winter seasonals sell well until around the end of the month, when the sales just tend to taper off until the spring seasonals ship out. Since Cold Snap was such a huge success last year the company wanted to try the market by selling it a bit longer than during last year's window. If you take issue with it convince people to drink the winter beers longer. From what I've seen, the market just doesn't support us packing out the stuff after Christmas; whereas Cold Snap sales may very well help an otherwise quiet couple of months.

As always, the opinions presented are my own and not that of the Boston Beer Company.

I was using that as an example, as when it was still being sold it was sold in 4-packs. Those were the only two I could think of sold like that off the top of my head.
