I feel like people that are doing legitimate cellar cleaning put a whole bunch on the line for a large want. Latly I've been seeing people that list their haves from a cellar cleaning and seem to manipulate the conversation back into a 1:1 type of situation.
This seems to me to just be a sneaky way around using the word auction.
The auctioning format infuriates so many people it seems.... why does this format of cellar cleaning not seem to do the same. Thoughts?

Not always. My cellar was over 900 beers. When I say "cellar clearing" that's what I mean. It does me no good to turn that into a 1:1 trade. Not only do I not decrease my numbers, I incur a shipping charge and likely end up with extras. Some may use it as a silent auction, but my goal is to move em on out

I always get a kick out of the "cellar cleanings" that include beers released a few weeks prior.

I agree with you, many seem like bullshit attempts to veil auctions, but those are pretty easy to spot.

I've never 'got' this one. It may seem fitting if I had been acquiring a bunch of crap I had no intentions of drinking. Who would do such a thing?

Where's my shop vac and damp cloth? I have some real cellar cleaning to do...

It's pretty easy to acquire a ton of stuff that you never end up drinking and realize you'll never get around to drinking when you trade a ton and don't keep the pace with consumption. Add ons, expansions, excessive shelf extras, etc. Some people are able to get rid of a lot by sending them out as extras, others try to take 5 bottles they don't think they'll drink and turn them into 2 they will drink or age better. It happens.

Move to Portland! It takes no time to acquire a ton of beer!

Some of these posts are definitely sneaky. Some people use it as a "legal" auction; some post a bunch of not very good beers and then ask for really-hard-to-get beers; and some actually want to trade up decent stuff by going well over $4$.

Weird, I'm not sure anyone would mistake your last trade offer:

    http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/ft-alpine-great-iso-blabaer.70671/

As a man being generous with his cellar. But then I guess I think back to when I bought a case of Great at the brewery and remember how easy it was. My tasting group has always treated Blabaer as more of a holy grail than Alpine beers, shrug.

Please show me where I'm proposing a cellar clearing in this offer? This is a 1:1 trade and says nothing about cellar clearing.

In regards to the fact that you bought a case of Great so it's not worthy of this offer. I guess the people that picked up cases of M, DDG, or Partridge are sitting on worthless beers.

If you want to cellar clean, just host a party. Otherwise, start drinking your "cellar beers" and stop buying shelf stuff for a while. You'd be surprised how many shelf beers turn into "cellar beers" just because they've been downstairs for a while. Next time you want to buy a BORIS and drink it, drink that 2yr old bottle in your cellar instead. Shit, it's not like Hoppin' Frog doesn't make BORIS all the time...

For a lot of people, "cellar cleaning" just means "collection revamping."

I cleaned my cellar out by drinking a lot of beer, and taking a lot of bottles to small tastings. If more people would do that, they'd discover that most of the stuff they're holding onto is probably either slowly going bad, way past it's enjoyable phase, or tastes pretty much like the same bottle they can grab off their local store shelf at any time.

The best cellar cleaning, with the best results in every way you can look at it, is to share the beers. I have moved well over 100 bottles from my cellar in the last 9 months doing this, and I can now get to the back area without tripping. Best of all it was enjoyed with friends, like beer is meant to do.

I've honestly just thought of "cellar cleaning" as a clever way of saying that you are wanting to trade a lot of beers for a lower quantity of beers. For example, i have done a few trades recently and received a few extras that i've had before. Is it wrong that i put those aside for a later trade and try to get a single bottle of a beer i haven't had?

I posted a 'cellar clearing' ISO last week and heard crickets. I'm not pissed about it, I think it was a fair trade of 10 bottles for a single bottle i wanted, guess others didn't agree. I don't think it's wrong to make these posts. One of two things is going to happen. I'm going to invite a few buddies over to drink 10 bottles of beer they have had and like. Or invite a few buddies over to try a beer they haven't had and would like to try.

For the record, i don't really keep a cellar. I've got about 50 bottles in a box in my closet, a third are extras that I've had already and would trade easily, a third are beers reserved for tastings that are just waiting for schedules to sync up, and a third are beers i am going to drink on my own when i want (the wife doesn't like me keeping them in the fridge)

My only "cellar beers" are at a buddy's house in his wine fridge, there are 5 bottles, 4 of which say Black Tuesday on them with different years.

I personally don't mind if people trade away extras I send, but some people find it to be bad form to do so.

Cellar cleaning=trade? You're doing it wrong.
Cellar cleaning=share beers with friends who are happy to have a free drink=win.
