So I am brewing tomorrow, and I am putting together a recipe with what I have on hand. I have a lb of Chocolate Rye (which I have no experience with) and am considering giving it a shot. How does this look?

    5 Gallons

    10lb 2 row
    1lb Chocolate Rye
    .5lb Black Patent
    .5lb Crystal 60
    .5lb Flaked Oats
    1.25oz Magnum @ 60 for 42 IBUS

    Irish Ale yeast starter

What do you think? Keep in mind, I am trying to put this together without a trip to the LHBS. I don't have rye malt on hand or roasted barley. Do you think this is worth brewing? Other things I have a little bit of are Golden Promise, carafa II, Special B, UK Chocolate, and Carapils. TIA!

Sorry for the late response here. I don't know much about rye or chocolate rye. I do know that I like my rye beers a touch sweet. I hope the chocolate accomplishes this for you--Otherwise I'd be looking into a lower L crystal. Since you're not going to the LHBS, that would work out ok. I hope you mashed around 154-156F. Let us know how it goes. I'd like to try a rye beer sometime. I'd hope for something like Founders Red Rye.

I've brewed with rye a time or two, and your recipe looks spot on. I got a really dry mouthfeel from using rye, so I say go for it. Do you have any other malts on hand?
