The sweetness of 90 minute comes off as much less cloying to me, and more similar to many barleywines I've had.

And I already said it, but you might want to stick to 7-8% IPAs. Torpedo and SN's rotating, GF WCIPA, Schlafly's rotating IPAs, mm... and assuming you're in Chicago, take advantage of the Surly for me :stuck_out_tongue:

I tend to prefer IIPA's to standard typically because I find them more sweet, and I like the balance. I see a few recommends here I that I find malty/sweet/well balanced like Myrcenary, New Glarus IIPA, Palate Wrecker. These all have plenty of sweet and malt balance to me. Maharaja? Huh?

Runiation is way to dry and bitter tasting for me, not enough malt to balance things out. Hoptimum is very un sweet to me too.

Ruination and Hopsickle aren't sweet at all, Palate Wrecker doesn't do it for me though. Don't like Green Flash brews at all. But sweet is a matter of taste, IMO Abrasive and HT and the best DIPA's I can get.

Vermont does it dry: HT, Double Sunshine, and pretty much anything Shawn Hill makes in this style will be super clean and lacking any assertive sweetness, at least in my experience.

Do you and DaKur, pointed out that you thought Hi_Res was a very sweet DIPA. Well let me tell you, you guys are 100% in the right, and I am totally wrong. I just cracked a can (totally sober) and it IS sweet. It's still a great beer, but to the OP, this is a sweet DIPA, and jman005 and DaKur said it.

Best answer so far. I must have been too drunk to think of that. I bitch about it all the time.

I agree that Green Flash beers are very hoppy without too much sweetness. Maybe overly hoppy!

Odd mix of responses here as tastes vary. I find DFH 90 Min malty but not too sweet. Hopslam has the honey sweetness but enough hops to keep it from being cloying. On the other hand, I find most Southern Tier beers, especially their DIPA Gemini to be too sweet.

I agree with several other posts that "higher" abv IPAs like SN Torpedo often hit the sweet spot between nice hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness.

The one DIPA that I find almost always hits the balance between sweet and hoppy is Odell's Myrcenary.

Finally had a Surly Abrasive last night. That's what I'm talking about!

Nice balance there. Not too sweet and not super aggessive despite the name. I find this incredibly drinkable. Maybe scarily so. Kinda reminds me a little of the single can of Heady Topper I've had -- minus the tropical fruit/peach thing.
