You do a lot worse than a trip to NorCal...
Between SARA and RR (or Bear Republic a few minutes north of RR), you could do your liver (and bank account) a lot of bad.

MI in May (probably not earlier), more specifically Metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, and maybe Holland and Traverse City would be a fun trip: Founders, Bells, Khuhnnens, Shorts, Brewery Vivant, New Holland, OddSide, and more..... Lots of choices within a couple of hours drive of each other.

Plus, you may still be able to catch KBS and Hopslam (maybe in April)... Although Portland would be an awesome trip as well. I'm sure you will enjoy whichever destination you pick.

Still haven't been to Michigan so this interests me. When does CBS come out? That's when I really need to go. Haha

If a New England/East Coast beer geek-out is not in the picture....

Then California....start in San Diego with a ton...(GF, Modern Times, Stone, etc.) and work your way up to Nor-Cal (up I-5 to Kern River, then cut over the 41/46 to Firestone Walker next, up the 101 to SF...Cellarmaker, Anchor, 21st Amendment, then go to RR in Santa Rosa). Hell, you can even make your way up to Oregon.

I just returned from the trip you are describing. Did not like Modern Times one bit though (I visited the North Park location). Everything else in SD was awesome though.

Wow...really? They are one of my favorite SD brewers. Glad you got a chance to check out the B(W)est Coast.

I'll throw out Indianapolis. Might be a decently priced flight and the town in chock full of brew pubs. Hit up Broad Ripple Brew Pub and Black Acre, then drive a couple hours down to Louisville and partake in some delicious brown water in the Bluegrass state.

I got lucky and chanced upon Victory at Sea Day at the Little Italy location. Really like that spot and stopped in twice. Ditto Bottlecraft. Also found an awesome coffee shop in that neighborhood (complete with $12 pour overs of Panamanian coffee, haha), Bird Rock. I also really enjoyed Societe and had a good convo with one of the guys there.

Stone, Lost Abbey, Toolbox and Alesmith visits also went down as well. Got some Speedway variants on New Year's Day and was happy about that.

Was there for work in November! Biggest surprise for me was New Day Craft. First time I ever bought meads in my life, they were that good. Tomlinson Tap Room was awesome as well. Lucked out and was there for their anniversary.

Nice. Used to live there. Never heard of New Day Craft, but I will have to check it out. Tomlinson is a cool setting in a good part of town too.

It's hard to go wrong with NYC. Although Industrial Drive in Portland ME has some great spring releases. Nor warm though.

Unfortunately, I do not think that Founders plans on doing CBS this year, but I could be wrong. Also Hopslam just got released today, so that may not be as readily available later in the Spring.

That's awesome! Although I probably won't be able to make it out to Grand Rapids.

I was really hoping to make it up from Toledo for my 1st founders trip but I'm not going to be able to either. Oh well, live to beer another day I suppose.

Consider a circle trip around Lake Michigan. Start in Chicago, travel thru 50 miles of northern Indiana, follow the coast all the way up thru Michigan (detouring inland only 50 miles to get to Kalamzoo and/or Grand Rapids) and up to the Traverse City area, then up through Bellaire (Short's Brewing), cross the 'bridge' and head up to Marquette while traveling west to Wisconsin and down that coast. Check out the map in MichiganBeerGuide.com (http://cdn.coverstand.com/20440/286317/f7dacc5cf6bab2646c4ce0dd5486249c92396723.2.pdf) pages 42-43 for a guide to the Michigan breweries. A lot of great breweries along that route just in Michigan, plus you'll visit Three Floyds in Munster, IN and the highly-touted 18th Street Brewing in nearby Gary.

    Late spring timing is advisable.
