Hello beer advocate. My name is Jesse. So I'm a newb when it comes to craft beers. Craft beer to me has always been Samuel Adams boston lager. Ive always been a miller lite -natural ice kind of guy. Over the last few months I've started drinking as many craft beers as I could find. Here's a list of beers I really enjoyed...Troegs nugget nectar, Troegs hop back ale, Sierra Nevada pale ale, Dogfish head 60 min, southern tier pumking, victory headwater. Some beers I didn't like... Victory hopdevil, Sierra Nevada torpedo, Troegs sunshine pils. I've been getting the sampler packs from victory and yards. The most recent pack I bought was the Troegs anthology which was pretty good besides the sunshine pils. I would say the best beer I've had is nugget nectar by far. Given the information I've provided can anyone recommend me some beers to try? Thanks
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/97 http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/116 You seem to like IPAs and APAs. When I got into craft a couple months ago, I went to the beer store and did a few mix and match 6 packs. Make a list of decently rated/high number of review beers. Try them out.
Just keep trying things. Sly Fox is a good local brewer, but don't try their Pikeland Pils if you didn't like Troegs Sunshine. Also seek out Stone Brewing and their Pale Ale, IPA and Arrogant Bastard is a must try. Bells Two Hearted is another great choice as is Ithaca Flower Power. Darn, just so many beers you could be trying it's hard to list them all. Start picking up singles and just start trying stuff.
Well he didn't like Hopdevil so I'd imagine there are quite a few IPA's he won't enjoy....I agree with the Flower Power suggestion. I'm thinking he'll struggle with Arrogant Bastard and some of the other more bitter IPA's.
Which part of PA are you from OP? Not asking to be creepy just want to know so some people could recommend a good brewpub etc....those places usually can give you some good recommendations based on your likes/dislikes...plus you can get a few "flights" to sample styles and such.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have to find a place that lets me mix and match six packs. I've been just buying cases of beer blindly not knowing if Ill like it or not. Mixed six packs sounds like a great idea. I live just outside Philadelphia in Delaware county.
If you live in Delco, stop in at Pinnochios at 131 E. Baltimore Pike in Media, they have a really nice selection of take out bottles. You can also try stopping at the bottle shop connected to the Frontier Saloon in Folsom on Baltimore Pike. Its a bit of a dive compared to Pinnochios but they have some good stuff from time to time and their prices already include tax. There is also a 10% discount for mix-a-six packs as well and they also have six packs as well of about 20-30 micros. Happy searching and enjoy!
Since you're right near Philly, you could also scoot down I-95 to State Line Liquors in Elkton, MD. Sign up for their customer card on line and you will get 10% off any singles purchased. They have a great selection and you can buy singles of every beer that they stock. In fact, as of right now, they are running a special with 20% off singles of Belgian ales (does not stack with the customer card 10% off) and 10% off packs. Might be a good way to try a bunch of different things.
I stopped by a place called TJ's drinkery in Paoli Pa yesterday. The place was awesome! Lots of good beer on tap plus they had a pick your own sixpack. I ended up going home with a nice mix of pale ales. I got 2-doghead 90min, 2-rogue dead guy ale, troegs perpetual ipa, and lagunitas new dog town pale ale. I'll be hitting up the frontier saloon this weekend. Its actually about a mile away from me.
Good call on TJ's they are one of the best in the area. Got myself some PtY at TJ's a couple of months back. Great beer selection, very good food and a friendly staff. I'd recommend checking out their website as they update their draft list quite frequently.
