My homebrew Hefe is excellent. Doesn't hurt you can get the real deal Weihenstephaner yeast from Homebrew shops. Super simple beer to make, I don't know why more American brewers don't do them right. Wheat, pilsner, a dash of noble hops, and let the yeast do it's thing.

Don't view this as a knock on the style, because I absolutely adore hefeweizens. But:

It's all downhill from the Weihenstephaner.

No love for the Dunkels? Hefes are good, but I like the Dunkels a bit better.
Anyway, I agree with some of the above posters that you should go with German: Weihenstephaner, Ayinger Brau Weisse, Franziskaner and Wurzburger are some of the ones I've had that I thought were really good. I've tried many a US version (never had the Live Oak) and they just fall short of the Germans.

I think there's a pretty good chance you will like dunkelweizen and doppelweizen (also called weizenbock) as well. In fact I would be shocked if you disliked dunkels. Doppels I could see a weizen fan disliking, but it's unlikely.

I like Ayinger dunkelweizen, Weihenstephaner Vitus and Schneider Aventinus.

As someone who thinks Weihenstephaner is the best available...

...I thought Tucher was excellent, and I hadn't even really heard of it prior to just happening to see it available at a local upscale restaurant a couple weeks ago. Really tasty.

And if you want to branch out a tad, for my money, Hacker-Pschorr makes the best dunkelweizen.

The previous posters are definitely correct on the German side (traditional). Weihenstephaner and Franziskaner are my favorite from Germany. Vitus is a particularly good wheat beer variant and very worthy of trying if you're a hefe fan. In America Widmer Hefeweizen cannot be beat. It is often the first ever craft beer drank by people from the NW. In bottle it is great (for it's style) and on tap it is just delightful. Unlike Blue Moon (relative garbage), the lemon (not orange) is fun and actually complements the beer.

Ugh. I'm of the opinion that putting a lemon slice in a Hefeweizen ruins it*. The lemon is supposed to be a natural flavor profile within the beer. It's no less gimmicky than putting an orange slice in a Blue Moon.

*Well, makes it not as good anyway. I guess it doesn't turn it into a bad tasting beer.

I just tried 3 Floyds Drunk Monk last night and it is right up there with Weihenstephaner and Ayinger. It's so good! I really wish they would make this available in 6 packs.
