I've got 3 hours between flights in Portland next weekend. Anyone have any recommendations for a good bottleshop near the airport? I wouldn't be opposed to taking a short taxi ride. How far is it to Cascade from the airport, for example.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Will you have access to a vehicle? Or do you mind paying for a taxi? There are no options within walking distance other than the Laurelwood and Rogue bars in the airport.

Bottles NW is nice and probably closest to the airport. Belmont Station is probably your best bet in terms of selection and it is about a 15 minute drive from the airport.

Also at PDX: Made in Oregon has a fair selection of bottles (C Concourse, past security checkpoint).

I'll agree that Bottles on NE Fremont is a nice shop and only 10-12 minute cab from airport. They also have a taproom and pretty good barbeque. Within a few blocks of Bottles is Alameda Brewhouse and Beaumont Market (small grocery with a great walk-in beer cooler). Map

To answer your question about Cascade... Map

3 hours doesn't really make it worth leaving the airport to me. Just drink a couple workhorses at the Laurelwood pub.

Dumb question... if your goal is to buy bottles during your layover, how are you going to get them back through security?

    PDX pub crawl!

    Laurelwood (concourse A) -> Sandoval's (C) -> Gustav's (C) -> Rogue (D) -> Laurelwood (E)

Then, if you're still looking to kill time, grab a bottle of Logsdon Seizoen from a Made in Oregon and ask a coffee shop employee for a plastic cup.

And good luck finding your gate after that!

Bonus points if you say "the Workhorse is better at the other location" at both places.

Don't forget the Beach Shack and Stanfords outside security!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Not a dumb question at all. Haven't really gotten that far. I thought about packing an extra empty bag and then checking it in during the layover.

I concur not worth it to leave. Also, remember that everything in the airport is the same price as outside the airport, and you can fill growlers.

You could easily get to Belmont Station and back in plenty of time if you weren't doing the trip between 4-630 on a weekday. Less than 15 minutes each way. You could shop and sip for an hour easy.

Never been to PDX, but I agree 3 hours seems a little tight if anything went wrong.

PDX has plenty of good beer (as others have stated), but if you want to venture out, Saraveza is a nice little bottle shop/pub 15 min from the airport (and the pasties are great).

I would strongly suggest staying the airport. Between all the bars people have mentioned and the Made in Oregon store, there's more beer than you need within the confines of the secure zone. Seriously, check out the link. They have Commons (including Myrtle), Logsdon's, Upright, Pelican, Caldera, Gigantic, Deschutes, Heater Allen, Hop Valley, Fort George, etc, all of which can be carried on because they were purchased post-security.

New question, can you open your own beers on the plane?

No. I believe it's a combo of federal laws and airline policies. I follow an airline forum and this comes up every so often. There'll be a story about some fool who buys a bottle of booze at the duty-free store, opens it in flight, and ends up causing a ruckus. Sometimes the cops meet the fool when the plane lands.

It should also be mentioned that prices at the airport are the same/similar to those anywhere else in town. So you'll be paying $4 or $5 a pint at the airport bars, and regular retail price for the bottles at Made in Oregon. Additionally, both Rogue & Laurelwood sell bottles & growlers that can be carried on. I almost never get on a flight from PDX without a Laurelwood growler in tow.
