    Hey BA,

So for the longest time I have stayed away from barrel aged beers. Something about the oak barrel notes just didnt sit well with me. Recently though I have been enjoying some BBA Stouts like Jeffersons Reserve Stout by Bluegrass and Dragon's Milk by New Holland. Could you guys recommend me some good bourbon barrel stouts that are fairly easy to find? The cheaper and less "rare" the better. Not against a good BBA barleywine recommendation either! Any help is appreciated!

None easy that I like all that much, Hoppin Frog is ok and expensive, Nebraska is more so. Your in VA BCBS should be coming around, and it's not oak at all, but still not cheap. Cheap and BA doesn't exist IMO, the process and barrel cost you just can't get around that. Siberian Nights, Wulver would be good bets too, Parabola is available in VA too.

Except you won't find Siberian Night or Wulver in VA, unfortunately.

I thought Va got most everything.

It might be a matter of where in VA. Northern VA doesn't see anything by Thirsty Dog, but I see that some parts get distro. My apologies for the confusion.

Compared to VA NC is a BA wasteland.

I would guess that Siberian Night might be your best bet if it is available where you are. Try to get singles. You can spend 12 bucks on two singles which gives you 24 ounces. A lot better than 14 or 15 bucks for 22 ounce bottle of Hoppin frog. Also a lot better then spending 20 bucks for 22 ounces of Old Rasputin. That's what the prices are around me anyway. Wulver is the same price, but it is a Wee Heavy.

Try BA Gonzo from Flying Dog. Very good BA porter that's pretty available still and not too pricey. Like it was said before, BA = $$

Something to kind of ease you in and that may still be available and is cheap, Weyerbacher Heresy. Same goes for their BA barleywine, Insanity. I think a lot of people don't drink Heresy because it has a thinner, lighter body and picks up more bourbon flavor, but if you haven't had many barrel aged stouts, it's a pretty easy drinking one. I think they were something under $3 here for Heresy and maybe $4 for Insanity.

Kentucky Ales BBS is relatively easy to get, cheap? Eh...

On this category price is always an issue.. But I'll put that aside.

Hoppin Frog BA Stout is fantastic and fairly readily available. On a basic distribution.. (albiet inconsistently available)
Goose Island Bourbon County Brand is the one you have to get.... Then go ahead and trade/find a Firestone Walker Parabola. If you love those, you'll be chasing the dragon via trade for the next 3 years. Good Luck.

Cheapness is just a bonus i guess. Really im looking for something thats not too hard to find, or something I dont have to trade for. BTW I live in NC but Im from VA, so I go back and forth quite frequently. BA Siberian night would be killer, as I love the base beer. Any one like weyerbacher heresy?

I feel you one that one. As bourbon was my first love before beer!

Cafe Royale is relatively easy to track down in Virginia in the winter if you're paying attention to when it's getting released. I got a case last winter when I was still living down there with no problem and would highly recommend it.

I just tried Anderson Valley BBS and it was decent. I got it in a trade, so not sure how much the 22oz bottle was.

It's only my sense, but good BA stouts are NOT easy to find, nor are they cheap. I've had many, and most are just not worth having again, so the best in a bottle will always be Parabola. It's NOT an easy find....so it may be better to find your fave Imp Stout (mine is prob Founders) and just drink it side by side with some Knob.

Olde Hickory Event Horizon. Tradeworthy and local. Comes out in Oct/Nov--check with your local bottle shop. Not real hard to get as usually flies a little under the radar.

Parabola isn't all that hard to find, but cheap it isn't. Especially if you trade or buy online, but its distro in Va

You could buy a shelf imp stout and put a few drops of bourbon in it, not ba but expedient, and as cheap as it could possibly be.

Other than being seasonal it hits all the points. It's a terrific beer and not really expensive, readily available for a few weeks after release.
