Going to SF end of Oct. for 5 days. Staying downtown (near market square). Wife will be at conference all day, leaving me to visit breweries! Other than the obvious (21st, Lagunitas, Russian River) can any locals clue me in to "must try" places an east coaster like me might overlook? I will have a car, so outside the city isn't a problem. Thanks for any tips you can give.

Magnolia on Haight Street was probably my favorite place. But there's also Social Kitchen over in the Sunset neighborhood. Thirsty Bear, which should be right near you that are also pretty damn good. I had heard about Pizza Orgasmica, but it didn't happen this trip.

If you go to the Anchor brewery (recommend!) try out Goat Hill Pizza. By far the best pizza I've ever had.

    RR would be my #1.

City beer store is worth a stop. Also take a drive over the new bay bridge and check out Drakes barrel house in San Leandro

Check this out www.beerbybart.com for lots of transit friendly stops.

I trust you'll have a car. Almost impossible to see RR & Lagunitas without one.

    Toronado is cash only.

As far as breweries go, Drake's is probably worth a stop, as another poster mentioned. I'd also very much recommend Sante Adairius if you don't mind the ~2-hour drive it would take to get to Capitola.

For non-breweries, Toronado, Mikkeller bar, and City Beer Store (all in SF) are all great. Beer Revolution in Oakland always has a great tap list as well.

My Bay Area "under-the-radar" brewery recommendation is always Iron Springs, but there are tons of great picks between SF and RR.
