Yeah I had Wake-n-Bake aged in red wine barrels and loved the Stone 11-11-11 in red wine barrels. Need to try more.

Very nice one. I think that because Baltic Thunder has a restrained amount of roastiness and a good malt base, it really works with the barrel.

I haven't had it since it was released- do you find that it is improving?

I have to disagree with this. I had 2 bottles of Only Void Red Wine and I disliked both of them. I found flavors in them that I do not look for in a stout. The tannic grape quality imparted an aroma and flavor reminiscent to an infection. It was an unpleasant experience all around and the rest of my tasting group agreed.

Though, I will need to hunt down more of this style to make a judgement across the board.

I have heard the same kind of talk about Black Hole and I found it to be incredible. I don't know if it is just different tastes or my palate not being as developed.

Evil Twin port barrel-aged Even More Jesus is incredible. Perfect balance of dark fruit, chocolate and alcohol.

I would avoid. Weak wine flavor, no barrel flavor, and an almost porno-blooper level of bottle squirting from the conditioning yeast (which I believe is champagne). The carbonation makes it too light-bodied as well.

I really enjoyed this, but I had it back when it first started getting imported into the US, and therefore had it "fresh".

Best red wine imperial stout in my book is Midnight Sun's Bar Fly still. Love that beer !! I hope that they make something similar to it sometime in the future !!!! On a side note for a red wine barrel aged beer 3000 by Midnight Sun is also a great barley wine.

I like red wine barrel aged beers but this Moa was awful.

I'd have to agree. It tasted like a sour stout more than I thought it would. Now maybe that's what they were going for, I'm just not sure.

The wine characteristics were much stronger on the six month old version (thinking back it may have been closer to 4-5 months). Seeing as that is what I was looking for in this beer I would say it was an improvement. I love red wine and the tannins picked up from the barrel I thought played great with the base beer. This around a 10 months old now and has probably continued to mature but I would imagine the wine is much more dominant than it was either time I had it. I would certainly grab another because I thought at its price it was a really great value.

I'm curious - what was the difference between fresh and 6 months? I just picked up a bottle.

The wine was barely apparent in the very fresh bottle. You could find it if you were looking for it but was just a mild accent. The older bottle was much more wine forward and had a tannic drying and somewhat tart taste to it. It was a much more interesting bottle to drink.

Red Thunder is also getting released again in the next couple months according to the Victory website.

Seeing as how Only Void is a wild fermentation stout, I'm going to say this was intentional.

Another one from Midnight Sun I'd recommend is Berserker, aged in red wine and whiskey barrels. One of my favorites.
