I love Stone's Pataskala Red X IPA and a local brewery made a Red X IPA that is absolutely outstanding, one of the best beers I've had in a while.

I only brew with extract which I know limits my options but it's what I'm working with.

So far, and maybe I never will, I have not seen a Red X malt extract DME or LME.

So my question is, what would you choose using extract + steeping grains to come up with something close to Red X? My guess would be Pale/2-Row extract with some sort of red steeping grain that doesn't add much crystal/caramel flavor. Any ideas?

Think I would steep/mini-mash some Red X along with your extract...Red X is a 12L base malt with just enough enzymes to convert itself, so mash/steep it long time for happy ending

i usually steep for 20 minutes or until the water hits 170, whichever happens first

how much would you steep? 1 pound?

    then use 2-row extract?

I would use 100% RedX for 75 min @ 150*F to get the color and flavor you want, but a couple lbs with the rest extract should work...may be time to start mashing...not that hard. Good luck

Haven't used RedX yet. Briess munich liquid extract might get you close to color. Maybe begins to approximate flavor, but I would imagine people would be able to tell the difference. Still it might lead to an enjoyable beer that is conceptually similar to what you have in mind. For more red, a very light touch of a roasted malt might help, although lately I have found it difficult to nail the color this way. Maybe mini-mash some redx to get some of the right flavors and do an extract with the munich? Maybe say more about the recipe.

I just made a move on Beersmith to see if it could work. I know it won't be perfect but I'd like a Red IPA that isn't full of caramel flavor.

    1# Red X steep
    .5# CaraPils steep

    5# Golden Light DME (4.7 SRM) @60
    3.15# Munich LME (10.1 SRM and 50/50 Munich/2-Row) @60

    1.066 SG
    9.1 SRM

It won't be perfect but I'd like a reddish IPA that isn't full of caramel and overly sweet. maybe i'm just a dreamer.

At NHC/HBC, Briess was giving away samples of a new malt, copper carapils. It comes in at 30 SRM, if I recall correctly. If you can find it, it might help. On the other hand, it is only half a pound of carapils. I have about 1.5 lbs, but haven't brewed with it yet.

thanks! i'll look into it, the 30 SRM could help bump my total SRM up towards a 12-15

either way, i'm willing to give it a try. Amber/Red beers are my favorite non IPA style so i'd love to combine the 2 in preparation for football season

    Ritebrew has it

They describe it as like carapils but providing color and flavor.

Just came in here to recommend this...briess gives recommendations on different quantities for different colors. I used 1/2lb in an IPA and it came in a light amber. Think that plus a pinch of roasted barley may get a nice red color
