I need some more cellar room, so I recently absconded with an old GE fridge from my friends garage. It hadn't been turned on in years, but it was stored open. I got it all cleaned and running. I wanted to see what the highest temperature setting was before I hooked up a temp controller. It was about 40-42 degrees and everything seemed OK. I got the controller hooked up and raised the temp up to 50 for a couple of days to see what my temp span was holding at. That's when I started to notice a slight odor. It kind of smells like the Formula 409 that I used to clean the refrigerator. So I rewiped everything down with clean water. But it's still kind of there. Worse in the freezer section.

So, before I start transferring anything in there, is there a threat that odors can get in the beer? I wouldn't think so, since I would assume CO2 would be escaping the same way. But I just want to be sure. Fortunately, I have a line on another refrigerator I'll have access to in a couple of weeks. Should I keep the old one or ditch it?

Just put a box of baking soda in it. It should pull all that crap within a week. Just make sure to swap for a new box every year or two (people forget this and then wonder why their fridge stinks).
