Dutyful BA that I am, I went. I din't bother to bring a camera but I'm sure you've seen plenty of hipster crowds holding beer sniffers and feeling themselves oh so superior to what they consider the beer swilling dinosaurs. Regensburg, being a town full of students (roughly 25000 of them in a town of 150000) is probably even worse than most in that aspect.
Anyways, the Haidplatz was well filled with people and since the weather cooperated I think the organizers were quite happy. Music was quite odd but not in an unpleasant way, to me at least. Most of the time we were there they had 70s disco beats with a sax player noodling over that. Sounds horrible here but as laid back backing music it actually worked quite well.
The beers were the usual suspects (see list @ http://www.craftbierfestival.de/2.html ) with lot's of Bock and all kinds of IPAs which I likely will never warm up to. I tried a few and they all ranged from bizarre to outright pukeworthy.

Beerwise the only light was the discovery of a new brewery in Regensburg who are active since January 2015. They had a fairly decent Märzen and I'll try to stay on that.

So...what's the name of this new brewery? I'll have to add it to my list for next month.

Great report... interesting to see how things are developing.

Just a general comment, not coming down on anyone, but I just want to put this out there...the same phenomenon of "hipsters" being the craft innovators in Germany as it is/was in the US. At least that's the impression, I personally think that the growth of homebrewing in the US was the original "Keimzelle", growth cell, for craft beer. Now the hipsters are at it again.

But think about it - what other larger group other than the Kool Kids are going to embrace change? In the marketing world they are known as the "Early Adapters" and it's quite hard to get a product into their hands and then have it be "cool" to eat, drink, wear, use, drive, carry, smoke, listen to, watch, etc your product. I don't hang out much elsewhere here on BA, at least as much as I used to, and maybe this has been discussed elsewhere, but I think it's a classical marketing scenario - which means it's going in the right (and anticipated) direction.

Any other Europeans out there find that this is happening in other countries??

Did you try any Urban Chestnut beers? I'm also intrigued by Brauerei-im-Eiswerk's smoked dunkel.

I'm curious as to which Urban Chestnut beers were available. I was just at their original brewery on Saturday for their Maifest.

Here in Brazil , the craft beers are also in the hands of young "cool" people...i think this is what you call "hipster" in America. Most of them are terrible, but , over time, competition will ensure that only the very few good ones survive. Personally, i prefer the old tradicional beers that have already stood the test of time.

Sure, if you can get it into (and out of) their hands for the ideal amount of time. This group is notorious for displaying little to no brand/style loyalty, so while their attention may help boost media attention for a limited time period, it will likely do very little to help your company in terms of long-term sales. Only true quality will do that. Moreover, it won't be long before these same "early adopters" become tomorrow's "early nostomaniacs" looking for the lost beers of their youth.

No, that one's been around for a long time. It's Hartl Bräu aka "Kreativbrauerei Volker Hartl" as they like to put it.

I did and that was quite good. I can't for the life of me remember which one I tried but it was a dark one :grinning:

Homebrewers were the original round of craft brewers, but back then they were "hippies".

Guess my memory is faulty and it wasn't a dark one then. I bet it was the Zwickel I had.
I like their humour. Calling their IPA "Zuagroasd" which is Bavarian and basically translates to "Immigrated IPA" is making me smirk every time I see it

I have had the US brewed Urban Chestnut Zwickl several times and it is indeed an excellent beer.

    Cheers!

I suspect that the Zuagroasd IPA is the STLIPA they serve here in St. Louis. The name wouldn't make much send over there.

How about the Fantasyland "West Coast IPA?" Been seeing that one around here, but I've only tried the Zwickel and Schnickelfritz -- both very good.

Hmm. I figured the Hopfenperle was the Pils, but did they only have bottles?
