Wow. What an epic let down. Got 3 bottles that are only 8 days old. Just popped one. Delicious, but no way in hell is it a top 5 beer. Enjoy By was wayyy better imo. Are there any other BA's that regularly consume Heady/other VT DIPAs and find Pliny to be a huge drop off? I'm not trying to crucify Pliny, just wondering if any east coasters are as disappointed by it as I am given the hype.

lololol.... Pliny is a pretty old recipe. It still holds up well with the new stuff.

I drink Pliny on the regular and the first time I had Heady I found it to be no better than/like Racer 5. I then tried it a few more times (especially out of the can) and I warmed up to it. Have a few more Plinys and let them linger. You may change your mind.

Most people have the wrong expectations before drinking Pliny imo. It's not supposed to be a big brutal hop bomb, it's a DIPA you could drink every day without destroying your palate and getting too trashed.

I love them both but they are different beers. I'm happy whenever I'm lucky enough to be drinking either one.

I know this is all subjective, but that statement totally shocks me. That two people could feel so differently about a beer. Racer 5 is great, but nowhere near the same universe as Heady for me.

I mean, obviously you're in the minority for this according to how people rate HT.

But on that subject, I really don't care for Celebration ale when most everyone else flips their lid for it, so I'm obviously in the minority for that beer. So crazy.

What's remarkable about Pliny is that it's so balanced. It's not a bitterness or citrus explosion, but an amazing, nuanced combination of both.

Yeah I found Pliny to be extremely underwhelming as well, but it's probably just because everyone proclaims it to be the best IPA in the world. I would agree that Heady is better

I give Pliny a lot of respect because it was the "original" DIPA with that hop profile. I'd take Heady over Pliny any day though.

While I've never had Heady (anybody?) I agree with you about Pliny. While very tasty, I think the hype around it had me overly excited and was let down a bit

I agree with everything you said. I've only had pliney twice, but I loved every sip of it. It is not a huge hop bomb, but the pinicle of balance. I just had a nice refreshing Anti-Hero iPA on a nice warm spring day, and Pliney would have been perfect to fill this role instead, but I would not have wanted a HT or Enjoy by, as it would have just been too much for this time of day. I would drink pliny any time, where I have to be in the mood for a hop bomb, and this is why I think pliny is so great.

Yeah, Pliny is just kind of a failure imo. I mean, it's delicious and really hoppy and amazingly balanced, but I just expected a lot more, you know? At least a blowjob and a free pizza with each purchase. Alas, I came away from the experience with a taste of bitter disappointment (and sadly not even hop related) in my mouth. Who knew that Pliny the Elder was simply an awesome double IPA as opposed to the cancer-cure everyone proclaimed it to be?

Now Heady Topper, that's a beer that will definitely cure cancer, and also world hunger. It's brewed with unicorn tears and virgin farts which smell of roses and is also slightly easier to purchase to a Massachusetts resident such as myself so it might not have such an over hyped status in my mind. These things are definitely not coloring my judgement, by the way.

Had both many times....heady is far superior to me.
That being said, I still think Pliny is a truly great beer. The aroma of heady is unmatched in anything else I've ever tried.

Tried Heady at the Extreme Beer Fest and loved it; never tried Pliny but I made it a few years ago apparently nailed it as it tasted great! Just had Stone's Enjoy By 5-17-13 IPA and rated it 4.5 - but had Smuttynose Big A IPA just past this years expiration data and like that the best of all - as with Smutty's Baltic Porter, I rated that a 5.
