You should probably learn the definition of irony.

Agreed. I'm just giving the Alchemist credit for what is practically "down-charging." I think cost of living is a factor, I also think the current model of the Alchemist, with a cannery devoted to only one beer, lets them keep prices down.

Let's remember everything is personal preference, so lets not get our panties in a wad. Everyone's taste is different. The only way you could even come close to comparing them is through the brewing process itself, with difficulty, ingredients, etc. and none of us no exactly how its done. Here's my list(not that it matters)...

    1. Societe The Pupil / Alpine Nelson
    2. Pliny
    3. Jai Alai
    4. Heady Topper
    5. Sculpin

My vote is neither! Pupil and nelson all day!

Next thread: Ethos (Random IPA no one has heard of) vs "insert world class IPA here." :stuck_out_tongue: Sorry brotha. Couldn't help it. Just had to.

I never said I was opposed to the East vs West battle. So I think you're wrong too.

Yeah that's definitely a very cool thing for them to do, especially since it is a world class beer. On my end I appreciate that RR doesn't price gouge for Pliny and actually has super low prices for the pint size bottles. I've spent more on less and paid for it (pun intended haha).

Jealous of??? An east coast who has desperately been waiting for a cult IPA? We've had one for years.

I was hoping my word would be good for at least 12! I just think Younger is far superior to Elder and so is Heady, but since I wouldn't want to be accused of idle talk:
    1. PtY
    2. Ruination 10th
    3. Hopslam
    4. Hoptimum
    5. Unfiltered Double Simcoe
    6. Enjoy By
    7. Dreadnaught
    8. Abrasive
    9. Stone 16th anniversary
    10. Devil Dancer
    11. Nugget Nectar (assuming I can interpret style here, I consider it an IPA)
    12. Hop Henge
    13. Ruination (in case you don't want to give me Nugget Nectar)

Yes, I like all of those, and probably more, more than I like Elder. I wasn't trying to put down Elder, just thought Younger was better competition for Heady (which would be around 5 or 6 on that list if I could have included it).

Edit: I was about to go to sleep and realized I left out two of my fridge's frequent flyers that I would also take over Elder: Union Jack and Sucks. Like I said, top of my head, probably forgot a lot more.

Anyone know if there is a thread where people list their favorite IPAs? I would love to try some new stuff.

Pliny t Elder, is a IIPA but it is the lower end of the gravity spectrum these days. That's very intentional and also what makes the hops stand out so well. 100 IBUs in a 1.020 FG beer just can't stand out the way it does in PtE. In my opinion, a brewer for 30 years, Pliny is a near perfect execution. It's a big beer but not huge. The hop bill is extravagant and beautifully constructed. It goes right up to the very edge of too much without falling over. Interesting that Lagunitas hit that same near-the-edge limit with Sucks, and it's getting some huge praise as well. It's a fantastic beer, but the components of Sucks' hop bill aren't quite "ahaa perfect" in execution in my opinion.

Exactly. Heady Topper is Led Zeppelin and Pliny is Steely Dan.

    You can love them both!

Clearly, to settle this issue once and for all, BAs from both the east and west coast need to start mailing boxes of their DIPA champions to midwest BAs who don't have a dog in the fight and we will collectively make the definitive, final decision to settle this once and for all.

I'll be the first to volunteer for this arduous task.
