I had it at release and thought it was just okay. I then had a bottle a few weeks ago at a restaurant and was very good. Sitting on 5 bottles and I think I'm going to really enjoy each one see time passes. Do think the price tag is/was high, though.

I didn't like it, but then again American-style Barleywines aren't my favorite style. IMO regardless of whether you normally like hoppier barleywines or not, THOSE particular hops need to fade. Maybe gets better with age, but I just don't see it developing into anything noteworthy.

Ive always thought it was a damn fine beer..Most of the negativity came from the price of it, so people felt the need to bash it..I really like it..Cant wait to have it with more age on it..Just traded one and really hope they enjoy it as much as I did..

I was quite let down by it, but yes, I suspect it will be right tasty in 2 or 3 years.

Hype either makes it taste better, or sets a beer up for disappointment.

Had it a couple weeks ago and really liked it but it wasn't near the best BW I've ever had.
I have another in the cellar.

    I'm trying to forget.
Worst beer Founders ever made. I'll give em a pass because they make great beer BUT charging as much as they did was criminal.

Man seriously. If that beer was $3.00 and not $23 I would still have a hard time choking it down.

Unfortunately, the last three Backstage releases were a bit of a letdown for me after Blushing Monk and CBS. I don't mind paying $20+ for a beer if it's good enough to be in that class. There seems to be a pretty good consensus out there, though, that there are better BA barleywines out there at a lower price point. I thought Bolt Cutter was decent fresh, but I couldn't drink the whole bottle. Will cellaring smooth out some of the harshness? Probably. Will it make the beer great? I seriously doubt it.

Bolt Cutter was about as good as Bigfoot.

The hype machine ruined this beer. I actually loved it and still have 2 bottles in my cellar. I think people need to keep in mind it will never be compared to KH or Sucaba....because it is an American Barleywine. It was supposed to be a hop monster, and barrel aged at that. I have a feeling that in just over a year it will be amazing.

I have one in a cellar as well. How long do you plan to age it? My plan is 5 years.

Given the level of harshness exhibited when it was fresh, I'm thinking a few decades.

I kid, I kid. I rarely make 5 years so it will probably end up being 3 or something.

Answer, but insert the word pretty in front of good.

There was nothing wrong with the brew, the problem was the expectations. Bolt Cutter was a great BA American Barleywine. What were you expecting? Perhaps, you expected that drinking this beer would be a life changing experience?

Personally, I think Bolt Cutter was great fresh and will cellar beautifully.
