Why are these not a mainstay for craft beer? I've discovered them on Sly Fox beers and a quick google search tells me there are very few others brewers yet to use them despite being around for over 6 years.

As someone who hates drinking beer from a can I choose to pour into a glass anytime it's an option. This style can however mostly eliminates my aversion to drinking from a can and their traditional gurgly flow and lack of nose.

What other brewers are using these?
    Have you tried them?
And why are they not more popular? (I presume cost?)

I believe they are illegal in New Jersey making them not that popular with distributed beer. I would believe there is also a patent or something like that involved.

Personally, I see it might help a little with the aroma, but I’d still rather pour into a glass so I can see it. If it was a situation where I had to drink from the can, I’d choose a regular top since this one seems easier to spill. Just my opinion.

I love these cans when I have no other option available, but to be honest I only really feel comfortable drinking out of glass. Even when I was younger and able to go hiking I'd carry a thick glass mug with me. The beer was usually warmish, but at least it was out of glass. Just my 2-cents.

I love the idea of having a glass-sized opening on a can, but the tab reminds me of the old "pull-tabs" that littered every beach and boat launch area for decades. Giant razor blades in the sand, left by dimwits.

Mike Hess Brewery in San Diego uses them and I love them. Perfect for when drinking from the can is the best option i.e. bbq, camping, etc.

The only bummer is I don’t buy Mike Hess much and the cans aren’t enough to sway my purchase.

But I agree they are great and which more breweries used them. My thought is they are more expensive and may require different packaging equipment.

I like them, but generally pour into a glass anyways. Nebraska Brewing uses them for their year round beers. Rochester Mills did have them at one point, but seems like they aren't using them anymore recently.

Ægir is the only one in Norway. Great for fishing trips.
But normally I drink me beer at home.

I also discovered them in Nebraska beers. I really like them although I've also always poured them into a glass.

The Pull-off tab openers started to go illegal in several states in the 70s. People started getting tired of the trash they created.

E.g., some guy is going fishing and decides to pop open a can of beer, where does the pull-off tab wind up. Some fish are big enough to try to eat them when they see them sparkling in the water. Also the tabs are sharp enough that if someone is wading barefooted in the stream they could get cut.

E.g., a car load of teens are drinking canned beer as they are crusing around. The where do the pull-off tab openers go every time someone pops a can of beer open? (Look at the one in the picture. Do you want some of those littering the road sides.)

E.g., someone is on a camping trip with a pull off tab, where does the tab go? Well maybe they follow the carry-in/carry-out standard and slip the pull-off tab into the hole in the can. The guy who does that before drinking his beer so he won't forget the tab may just discover that he's cut his mouth on the sharp edge of the tab.

With today's push-top cans there's only one piece of trash and the sharp edges aren't particularly accessible by accident or carelessness.

Good point, I might be one of the few that slip it back in when I finish the beer

The Sly Fox cans are manufactured by Crown - I'd imagine it's their patent, not the brewery's. https://www.crowncork.com/beverage-packaging/innovations-beverage-cans/360-end

When Jim Koch announced their new can design, they claimed that they had looked into a removable lids but decided against it for two reasons, IIRC -
    (1) A number of states outlawed them
    (2) Consumer reluctance to drink directly from the can out of fear of being cut with a sharp edge.

Yeah, I did that one for a while but turns out the possible negative results wasn't just a Seventies Urban Legend.:astonished:

I hate these things. @drtth listed some of the reasons why and when you pour or drink from the can the larger lips of the can keep some liquid in there that just won't come out. Is it a lot? No, but more than a regular can so it's a little wasteful. Also, if you are outside and drinking straight from the can better take a sip quickly right after opening, as they are easy to spill if you are bumped into; and if your can is knocked over the liquid drains so much quicker.

And in my neck of the woods we have some of the trashiest people I have ever met in my life so I find these things laying around enough that it's an annoyance.

Looks Iike a dribble glass. I’m all for innovation, but my limited brain can’t see any significant improvement on what we have now.

I've only had one, Nebraska Brewing Nut Brown Ale. The beer wasn't very good, but the can was an interesting surprise.

Mike Hess Brewing of San Diego messed around with this can style for a bit, not sure if they do anymore since I don't see them on shelves anymore

Only a few oddball breweries in my “area”, and one in Saint Louis when I was there recently. I think it’s pretty cool. Gives more room for CO2 to escape. More aroma, less bloat. It’d be something I could get down with.
