Seen these from a couple different breweries. I very rarely drink from a can but if you need to these cans are nice to have.

I've never seen this style can, and I don't think any brewery in Michigan uses them.

It looks like the can is probably compatible with existing canning machinery, and it's only the flat top part that is different, but if the can is not compatible with existing canning equipment that's a big reason they have not caught on.

Also, how easy is it to cut your lips on the edge from where the top is pulled?

I lived thru punching two pre done holes in Coors cans, that was death on the fingers. That was innovative over a church key, in a day of steel beer cans, and I don’t see popping a lid off a can all that much a thing. I just see it as a bit messy but not all that hazardous to your health.

It would be pretty hard to. It doesn’t leave a sharp edge, for one, and the edge it pulls from is pretty recessed. So unless you’re really jamming your mouth on the lip for whatever reason...

The Front in Great Falls, MT did use them on 16oz cans. But in the last couple years they rebranded as Jeremiah Johnson and went to normal 12oz cans. Was pretty bummed as they made a pretty good scotch ale I used to send out as an extra in trades just because of the fun can.

It would be great if someone were to design a stackable screw-top can.

Found this (rather salacious headline from Today):

I have definitely seen them before, but I cannot not recall which brand. That said, I really don't care for them much. Call me a purist, but if you cannot decant the beer, you cannot know what the head, retention, lacing, and color/clarity really look like.

Since beer is a multi sensory experience, you are basically missing an important element of that. Drinking out of the container is a convenience, but perforce a limiting one.

I see no particular benefit to this. What would really get me excited is a resealable can. Like of like the larger Monster energy drinks. Now that would be useful, particularly for some higher ABV beers in 16oz format. [IMG]

You're too late - Sixpoint had 'em but they disappeared quickly...

Bought a few at a liquor store next door to a BYOB sushi place that had a lunch special. They tended to foam up a lot upon opening, regardless of how careful one was.

Those damn Coors knuckle-buster cans sure caused me a lot of sore knuckles, particularly the small dot which was harder to hit the more you drank :grimacing:

It was different that’s for sure, I’ve never seen that on any other beer before.

Now that I'm old and have arthritis, I often get sore and swollen finger joints, usually the knuckles in my right hand I used to open those damn cans. I should sue Coors.

They only time I drink from a can is when I'm working in the yard or my shop, and that can looks like a good way to have shit fall in my beer.

Genesee had 'em, too -- briefly.

Coors called theirs "Press Tabs". According to the book Citizen Coors, adding to the difficulty with the Coors' cans was Golden CO's altitude of 5,675 ft.
They even created a little promo keychain tool to help open the Coors cans.
Of course, that was kinda going backwards to the pre-pull tab days and needing a can piercer.

They are nice for touch-up paint jobs or cleaning small paint brushes and other times when you need a small disposable container...

It seems to me that the point of pouring a beer, any canned or bottled beer, into a glass is to allow for proper head development. The taste of beer consumed directly from a can (or bottle) is *nothing^ like the same beer, properly poured into a decent glass. Of course, I recall the sneering reference: "he drinks his beer from a glass." But then is is a word: "Philistine".

That’s some great info, it does explain a lot, don’t remember the tool though.

Urban Chestnut in STL uses them. It's a great option when headed out on a camping trip or tailgating and a glass isn't an option.

They are illegal in a lot of place due to massive issues in the 70's and 80's with littering. If you make a beer in this type of container you cant distribute all over the Country.

I wish more brewers would use this style of can where the whole top comes off.
I'm going to assume you're talking about UCBC in StL, or has someone else started using them as well?

Yep! UCBC and one oddball brewery from Put-In-Bay up here are the only two I’ve seen doing it.
