I’ve been reusing the same original WLP001 for like 7 maybe 8 times. The results have been phenomenal. Fast start, clean beers, good attenuation etc. I am doing my last repitch with it and plan on doing a Pliny Clone. A group of my friends it’s their favorite beer and no matter how much they drink it they still seek it out and send a text when it’s on draft or at our local bottle shop. Having a little get together at my house in a few weeks and it would rad to have it on draft. I expect it being different but should be close.

I’ve used the same yeast for pretty much every style except dark. Done light, hoppy, pale etc. When I dry hop I use a bag just in case so I can extract the hops from the trub. would repitching from a dark beer to a lighter carry over any flavor impact?

Hoping that because there will be so many hops that it would cover up any slight roast flavor from the black ipa.

Could I wash the yeast? My process is to just pour the yeast grub with beer into a mason jar then pitch it into the new beer.

    Thoughts?

If you decant the beer off the yeast I don’t see why it would be noticeable at all.

I'd wash it. You probably won't get much in the way of roast flavor, but it'll definitely add some color, if that's important to you.

I'd buy a new packet. You're getting what, 8 pitches per packet? That's about a buck-a-brew for yeast . . . and you want to get it down to 90¢? At some point it will go south on you. How much you have invested in Pliny hops? How much reputation at stake? Worth it to save a dime?

I would just do what you normally do with the repitching. It obviously is working for you so I wouldn't play around with anything new like yeast washing when an investment like a DIPA is on the line.

Plus, I think you have the makings of interesting Brulosophy-like experiment. Not a triangle-testing "Exbeeriment" but still something that addresses biases, in this case against color. You are probably going to end up with a beer that is much like a Pliny but the color will be off. Will your Pliny-loving friend's love it the same? If yes, you are the hero, if no, you got yourself 5 gallons of DIPA.

its not so much about cost but the results I am getting have been awesome. Getting better attenuation and just overall performance with it. Plus, I like not messing with a starter. I just repitch.

saving $$$ is good, better brewhouse efficency added bonus.
run with it and let us know. im betting you will enjoy yer brew.

once used irish stout yeast for a ipa. dumped what little beer was left and dumped in the wort.

ferment was quick with no stout tastes on the finished beer.
    f,ing right.

If it was my recipe “my beer” I would have had no hesitation of reusing the yeast. The pitches and results have been great. So much so that I didn’t want to brew anything that I couldn’t use the yeast. I am going to do the same with a lager yeast and see how it works out.

I bought my hops in bulk so it was nice just picking up grains for like $15-$30 and have a 5 gallon batch ready for cheap.

Did you pick up any color from the yeast? I was thinking of repitching slurry from a Baltic Porter to a Helles or AAL. (Can’t get much more extreme than that!) Now I’m thinking that sounds like a crazy idea. Should I make a starter with a smaller amount of the slurry after decanting all the beer off, or should I just buy new yeast?

Maybe, I'm not married to standards in beer making. If any color was added , I'm sure it was minimal.
All I can say is I drain off all the beer till there is only a yeast cake left, then either dump in your wort or spoon out yeast cake to a new sanitized fermenter,,, with a sanitized spoon of course.

I have no experience transferring Baltic to a lager or helles.

If color is a big factor in your beer drinking life, then either wash or use new yeast.

    That's the best I got.
