I'm a bit of a hop noob. So I'd like to be able to tell them apart better. I've been wondering if there's any list of beers that represent a particular hop or hop combination well. Or if this community could easily compile one for beers available in the Chicago area so I can compare and contrast. Would love any input on this. Thx.
Homebrewing is really nice for this- do a bunch of SMaSH brews. Single malt, single hop. I realize this may not be an option for you though.
Some nice suggestions here http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/beers-that-feature-a-particular-hop.33904/
Excellent. Thanks for that link. I'm bad at searching... Still wouldn't mind seeing a more local list. Breaking down three Floyd's, goose, revolution, etc. But that link is super helpful. Thx.
If you can wait a few months til 4/20, Dark Horse Brewco is releasing an IPA variety 12 pack, that will contain their standard Crooked Tree IPA, as well as three other single hop varieties. Check their facebook page for details. Their artic, ollirama, F.F., and 5Cs versions of crooked tree have been pouring on and off at their taproom (in Marshall, MI) for a while now, and they've been bringing them to different fests/parties for a while.
off the top of my head, these are available in chicago: 3 floyds zombie dust - citra 3 floyds gumballhead - amarillo bell's two hearted - centennial weyerbacher double simcoe (may need to go to wisconsin for this) - simcoe pipeworks something hoppy this way comes - sorachi ace (not sure if this is a single hop beer though) pipeworks on her majesty's pleasure - nelson sauvin pipeworks citra ninja - citra stone arrogant bastard - chinook founders red rye PA - amarillo there's also the mikkeller single hop series, but imo these are rarely fresh and always too pricey. edit: added gumballhead edit 2: added founders red rye
according to 3 floyds' website, alpha king is cascade, centennial, and warrior. doesn't list anything for pride & joy.
