The spruce tip beer I had at Ft. George brewing in Astoria OR had the aroma and flavor of Cascade hops, though no Cascade hops, or other hops were used. The tips were from Sitka Spruce.

I enjoyed that Ft. George beer a lot! It was strong with tree.

I thought you guys were talking about the labels until I found this picture online. Was it just the Poor Richards that came in blue bottles or all of the historical beers?

I have had the current Poor Richards beer from a few variety cases of the Ales of Revolution, but I'm not a huge fan so now I just buy the Washington Porter by itself.

I likes me some DirtDevil but will keep an eye open for Hop Ranch. A little high in the ABV department for my tastes, but will definitely give it a try. Reviews say that the alcohol is well hidden, so I might really like this one. Thanks!

As an ex... smoker, resin has a particular meaning and flavor to me. It's related to pine, in the sense that it's a wood related flavor, but has many differences. It is heavy, musky, musty, a bit dull, and somehow sticky. It's a flavor that lingers in the background, and one that staying on the tongue, sticking around to influence subsequent sips. It's a flavor I see many call "dank".

Pine shares a woody flavor with resin, but is light, sharp, and slightly floral. It tastes fresh, as opposed to resins musk and musty natures. It's a flavor that surges to the forefront, and then tends to give way to other flavors.

That's my outlook on it personally.

Piney, a fresh cut Christmas tree or the forest on a warm day. Resin, sawdust from cutting softwoods like pine or a walk near a sawmill.

I think it depends partly on how long the hops have been in the boil. Amarillo, Mosaic, and even Citra hops can taste somewhat piney in your more bitter, West Coast IPAs--whereas, as late-boil additions or dry-hops, they come across as very fruity.

    I agree.

Resin, for me, has a sweet, sappy quality that differentiates it from the bright aromatics of pine.

Great description of Mosaic. I definitely get the body odor/onion quality from this hop. And while I hate onions and fear smelling of B.O., I love this hop so very much.

Pine to me is that slight, herbal bitter bite that is similar to walking through an evergreen den.

Resin tastes sticky, and tends to linger for a while. It doesn't often come off as bitter, but without a doubt a hop quality. It's somewhere between pine, sap, and fruity, floral.

That's just my interpretation of the two.

I've experienced that too! Jackie O's Mandala Citra IIPA, despite being all Citra, it had a nice bright piney quality to it. I'm assuming because of the sheer amount of hops they used in it.
