I can see how some people feel that way, and I agree that meaningless bumps (i.e., "bumping this for the evening crowd" etc) are annoying, but I think that making an actual contribution to the thread mitigates the bumpiness of these comments somewhat - at least enough to keep me from worrying about them.

somebody mentioned about the "bumping" and how irritating it is. I do not mind the posting of trade references and all but the bumps are annoying. Rather have postings allowed but the thread can not get bumped back to the top due to a response.

I'm hoping it is a byproduct of people unfamiliar with the new site. I can see where the move from BM's to private threads could be a bit confusing for the less tech savvy people. I'm definitely seeing it a lot more on the new forum than in the old posting ISO/FT forum.

But generally I agree - I don't much see the point of it beyond "marking your territory" so nobody else responds.

Happen to me last night. A thread I started a few days ago got bumped up top because the guy didn't know how to Bm (initially). Got 5 new Bms on it I wasn't expecting. Then I started a conversation with a friend in the thread, now it's back on top again. I should have moved the convo to BM, but it was just easier to keep replying.

Also thought about this. Since you can delete a reply, can you bump your post up top, delete your bump, and then have it look like a new posting?

I just don't understand why the trading forum isn't defaulted to:
    • Sort threads by: Thread creation time
    • Order threads in: Descending order
Then you can allow vouching, additional posts from the OP offering more beer, additional posts from others who want to talk about bottle counts/vintages, etc... None of it will bump the topic to the top of the first page.

And then we can deal with people creating the same thread four times in 24 hours.

well, you can sort by creation time if you so choose...

You can customize it however you like. I definitely prefer most recent responses.

Perhaps I'm alone, but bumps really don't bother me so long as people aren't abusive with it. Realistically you sometimes need to get your post seen 2-3 times as there are different timezones and completely different sets of people on during the day vs at night. All people end up doing is posting the same damn thing all over again if you don't allow bumps anyway. Bumps have probably gotten lots of trades done that the right eyes would not have seen without the bump, and the purpose of the trading forum is to get trades done, so why not...

To both you and Shogo, I know I can set it how I want it. I'm talking about how I would like the site default to be set, in that forum.

Sure bumps have gotten trades done. Bumps have also probably stopped getting a lot of trades done as they push other people's posts down the list. It's all how you look at it.

I agree to a point, but this is how I look at it...

Some trades need bumps and some don't. Those that need it will bump, and those that don't need it will drop off. So if the system worked perfectly, which I'm not saying it does, the bumps are only harming trades that are already done.

Now, the real question is "how many trades need bumps?" If that number is something low like 20%, then bumps should have no noticeable impact, and should be perfectly acceptable. If the number is high, like 80%, then yes, bumps are going to make a mess of things. I tend to think necessary trade bumps are on the much lower side, just judging by the nature of most of the trade requests. It's typically the tougher matches that need more eyes, and thus bumps.

I second this especially. Refreshing the page sometimes puts it back to the default which is a bit annoying. The best thing about the no reply ISO/FT was you could clearly tell which ones you'd seen before and which you hadn't.

You can tell that now too- by the bold/unbolded text. Also, your avatar appears as a "picture in picture" of sorts in the subset of the OP's avatar if you've commented in the thread.

Yes, but if someone else posts in a thread you've already read, it comes back up as bold. I think that's what he's referring to.

Somewhat this, but also I said "thread I've seen" not "thread I read"
If the subject line doesn't interest me, I don't click on it therefore it stays bolded.

My way of determing this on the old forums was just go down the page until I hit a post I had read and know there were no posts after that I hadn't seen at least the subject line.

the only justification for self-bumps is "my trades are more important than everyone else's." since this is false, all bumps for the sake of bumping are dick moves.

If im itching for a trade i look at all the ISO/FT for the past couple of days. You don't need to bump it every hour.
