Anyone keep track of the retail value of their cellar inventory? If not, how about an estimate?

Haven't been at it for that long, but after about fifteen months I am at 175 beers at $900.

    How long, how many, retail?

I always find threads like this to be bad form.

So I am not surprised that it is one of the first threads on the new forum.

Sorry, don't mean for this to be a biggest dick competition. Just trying to gauge whether others are plowing as much dough into their undrunk beers as I am thinking its something I should ratchet back on.

And if this was a biggest dick contest, you definitely would have won.

Much like facebook, it appears we need a "dislike" button.

How is this bad form? The guy's just asking a simple question. I wonder all the time about the retail value of my cellar but I haven't had the time to sit down and count yet.

I am starting to ask myself, when am I going to drink all of these? A new special release or seasonal comes out seemingly every few days and gets added to the horde. Why am I doing this? Its very compulsive and non-rational.

oops, Bigfoot just dropped in STL, gotta go!

Same here. I keep telling my wife, "I will only buy specials, one off's, etc. - nothing 'regular'" but it seems like there is a special or one off coming out every week! I can't keep up with all the drinking I need to do.....

I have maybe 180 beers right now. Best guess is somewhere between $1800 and $2000

This would put your beers at about $5/each... I agree it is mostly a "measuring contest", but please tell me this is a miscalculation.

Nope. Detailed spreadsheet. Mostly bombers, 750ml that bring the avg way up. Also KBS and BCBs and Backwoods etc in the 12oz. Not a lot of $6.99 six packs in the cellar though I drink mostly $1.25 avg per beer like SN and Stone etc. The keeper beers are always more rare or just more expensive due to style. The scariest part is beer is cheaper in STL than most places! My cellar in NY would prolly be $1,200.

I've got it listed on my renters insurance... which amuses my friends who are not quite as much of beer geeks as I am. Although, they are all willing to come over to do tastings whenever I decide to do one.

I have considered checking into insurance, I have guesstimated somewhere around 5 grand for the beer itself. I refuse to figure it out, especially considering all I acquire through trade is $20-30 in shipping/box of 6 to 12 bottles. That does factor into worth if you ask me, since it pays for the beer too.

My average beer in my cellar is $12-15/bottle, with plenty over $20/bottle. Depends on what's in the cellar. I have way more bombers and 750s.

I am up to about $300 worth of cantillon classic and another $150 worth of Pretty Things Barleywine. Prob. another $100 of fantomes and random strong ales.

The cost incurred of shipping in a trade has no effect on the value of the beer other than to our own internal accounting/beer balance sheet management. It's a cost that you eat (or drink). Yes, it hurts your pocketbook but the market value of the beer doesn't change.

The problem is everybody has wildly differing amounts of disposable income and/or has been cellaring for different amounts of time. So I'm not sure how you could fairly make a comparison to others to determine if you should ratchet back.

The better questions to ask yourself are around your own financial situations - i.e. - Are you running up credit card debt to maintain a cellar? Are you paying your bills and saving enough money? Are you hurting other parts of your life to support your beer habit?

Just because you can afford to do something doesn't mean you should do it.

The retail value of my cellar is about $1100 over abut 80 bottles. I try not to keep too many bottles in the cellar actually right now I'm trying to get that number back down to around 50, looks like I will be drinking well for the next couple months.
