I am wondering if someone can tell me what the definition of a retired beer is for the rating purposes. I saw Miami madness was on the list before and then went off because it was retired. And now it is back on at number 190. Can one of the moderators or someone tell me what the definition of a retired beer is? I thought if it had not been produced in a year that it was retired?

I believe a retired beer is one the brewery has said will not be reproduced again. So an annual release would not qualify, but if they said "this is our last production of this beer" it would be marked retired. I think the reason for retiring is simply to keep them in the system, as far as reviews and being able to access their reviews goes, but to also mark that the beer in question would not be produced again for those looking for it. For example, I know Crown Town was released once last year (and thought to be the only year, so marked retired) and then brought back for a release this year. It probably should be retired again considering it's release is contingent on the Royals baseball team's performance.

Then again, I could be wrong. I'm a bit brain numb after writing a whole lesson plan.

Basically beers are marked as "retired" if they are not going to be produced again. Sometimes one time beers are produced again on a rotational basis (sometimes with more than a year between releases). Beers that are marked as "Limited" are automatically retired after one year.

People provide updates when beers are being brewed again or brought out of retirement.

Usually they retire beers that are no longer brewed. If a beer is brewed again it is brought out of retirement which would put it back on the list.

So is Miami madness retired or will it be brewed again? Does anyone know?

The person who submitted the update said a small batch was made for the anniversary.

I am still trying to understand at what point a beer is retired. CD 15 from HF was put out mid November and now is considered retired? I understand it will no be brewed again but is there a time limit as to how long it takes until it is retired?4

For instance CD 15 is retired although it was released in November but not Ann which was last released in Feb 2015 or Aaron which was last released in September 2014.

Can one of the moderators tell me the definition of a retired beer and how long a beer can stay on a list?

There's a section in the site FAQ that explains it.

OK. I read that part before so why is CD#15 retired when it came out in November and Aaron and Ann are not retired and it has been more than a year since they were releasd?

Because someone reported an update that it was "retired" - off the top of my head, I have no idea who submitted the update but it might have been someone associated with the brewery. We get a lot of updates from brewery that are trying to clean up their pages with what is current.

In the specific examples you gave, Aaron and Ann are marked as availability = "Rotating" which does not auto-retire them after one year (that only occurs for beers marked as availability = "Limited").

Maybe it would be better if you explained why it matters to you if a beer that was only brewed once is marked as "retired" before 1 year?

Some beers are year round, they only get retired when the brewery stops making them and someone reports that update.

Some beers are seasonal (Fall, Spring, Summer, Winter), they only get retired when the brewery stops making them and someone reports that update.

Some beers are made on a rotating basis (made more than once but not necessarily as a seasonal - maybe multiple times a year and maybe only some years), they only get retired when the brewery stops making them and someone reports that update.

Some beer are limited/made once, they get retired after one year or when someone reports that update.

THanks. Just trying to understand all this. I know this is not rocket science. But if CD 16 was brewed in November even if it is a one off should it not stay on the list unitl a year after it was released?

Not necessarily, when the brewers put out the next beer in a series they often request that the previous one be marked as retired.

Why does it need to stay active if they know they have sold out of it and it was only brewed once???

Just trying to figure out how things come and go in the top 250. If that is the rational then I am just wondering why CD 14 is not marked as retired?

Thanks for the comments back. I am not trying to be a pain in the ass.

Because it was not reported... The few (volunteer) Site Editors do not go out looking for things to update, we just act upon what is reported to us and try to verify the data before applying it.
