I guess this is a drunken thought on my part, but I was wondering what others thought of a "like" option on beer reviews. I know it's more of a forum type thing with likes and dislikes, but I feel like there has been a lack of appreciation for the in depth beer reviews here on BA since the option for a quick rating has been introduced. I'd like to see an option for likes on beer reviews and also the ability to comment on other peoples' reviews. This would make it convenient for us to comment even if we have already "had" the beer. I abused the had option at first, but have been trying to recently review more beers overall.

I often read reviews and want to comment or agree with what many others have to say, but at this point, that is not possible. Comments, anyone?

P.S... I know no one cares about how many likes everyone gets, but I'd like to be able to appreciate what other have to say about beers

I think it would be a positive if we could like beer reviews or comment with our own thoughts. Nice drunken thought.

It'd be great if those "likes" could be incorporated into the overall score of the beer- hence, a beer that gets mostly 3's but sees more "likes" on 4 ratings gets a slight bump up in rating total. And vice versa of course.

This would be especially valuable for those beers rated 100- maybe some folks are making valid critiques while others are just sliding up to 5 because they are finally drinking Pliny/HT/ZD/BCBS.

Not a major bump, some fraction of the full rating.

I think there's too much working against this. If this was to work best the most liked reviews would appear first, since it could be assumed they are the most helpful to people potentially buying a beer. Then new reviews would be at the bottom, and probably get very few likes if any, especially with a beer with a thousand reviews. And I know at least for myself I only look the first five or so reviews, so even if you kept the review updates as it is now (newest show first) then each would probably get a few likes and then just move down the list.

There are some people who write great reviews on this site, so the follow option can sort of be like a "like" option if you will. I follow one person whose reviews are awesome, and there's some others I should follow too, but i'm not sure a like option if completely necessary. But what the hell do I know, its certainly a intriguing idea at the least. maybe i'm afraid no one would like my half ass reviews

Maybe a "helpful" button like Yelp has? That way each review can be rated in terms of "helpfulness". In that case, it wouldn't affect the overall ratings, since many times the people clicking haven't tried the beer yet.

Or "agrees", but that would just be for folks too lazy to do their own quick review.

I'm on board with a 'like' button for for reviews, but I think comments would have too much potential for abuse. There's already a guideline for reviews that cautions against referring to the reviews of others. Comments seem like they would descend into petty disagreements on whether or not a beer was good or bad.

But a 'like' button is a good idea because it's positive only. And you wouldn't have to change anything about how reviews are displayed. Make 'Most Recent' the default sort and just add the ability to sort by most liked in addition to Top Reviewers, Highest, Lowest and Most Recent.

Not sure how easy it would be to incorporate likes into the rAvg though.

Ok, agreed that comments would probably get out of hand. That was a "too drunk" thought within my drunken thought :astonished:.

And to robear, I would think "agrees" and "likes" would be in the same boat. Either works.

So how does a thought become a reality on this site? Maybe if a moderator sees this or a fellow BA knows, they can chime in.

I want a like button in the trade forum. There is some funny sh*t there sometimes.

We've actually been working on something along these lines. It's part of a larger update that should roll out later next week.

PS - I moved this thread to Site > Feature Request.

I think this is probably the best way to go about it. I've had the thought to include a "Like" button on reviews but always determined that favoritism for a particular beer, user or both would be too much of a factor. But "Helpful" is an adjective I'd not thought of and can actually see working. Like, even if it's a bad review, if someone else had a similar bad experience and agreed with it, they can deem it "Helpful." I think this could actually be implemented. As for "Likes" affecting a beer's average score...No. Aren't the scores inflated enough?

this is a great idea if only people reviewed beer that they drink ... more often then not they rate and not review

While I don't really read reviews, I think a like button is a good idea for for those who do read reviews. I do not, however, think the number of likes for a review should be any factor in a beers score. Example: Somebody has a local favorite beer that has a lower score than they think it should. The person could then "like" all the reviews with +Rdevs to edge the score up a bit more.

I like the idea of a "like" or "helpful" button. I am 100% against the idea of factoring that into the score of a beer though. Much like having no control over the criteria individuals choose to base beer score decisions on, you can't control the criteria for which a person decides to "like" a beer review. It's bad enough that some people trash a beer simply because they don't "like it" even though it might be a world class example of it's style. To factor whether somebody likes a particular beer review into the overall review score of that beer just further skews things. After all, maybe somebody clicks "like" because they merely find a review entertaining.

i always agreed with the bros argument against review likes (if i recall, they didn't want to discourage unpopular viewpoints). that said, there are other ways to go about it (don't publicly display the likes; don't display likes at all but record them for the liker so s/he can see trends of trusted reviewers... even after they sober up).

Can we get some sort of "like" button for reviews? I've read so many wonderful reviews on this site, and I'd love the option to show my appreciation. It would also be useful in the sense that a user could rely on the most popular reviews for a beer when she's standing in the aisle of the grocery store trying to decide if that new imperial porter is up her alley and worth the $12.99 without sifting though a bunch of reviews.

This has been said before, and I personally think its a fantastic idea. I usually scroll through ratings until I see a written review. I'm guilty of just rating beers, I need to stop being lazy and right some damn reviews!

They literally just changed it so there are upvote and downvote buttons on individual reviews according to how helpful or insightful or whatever you think the review was.
