I could swear there was an extra element (a flavor I got) to the previous year's SJ that made me prefer it. With that being said, though, I'm a HUGE fan of sweet darker beers, so sweetness would definitely have helped. It's not like SJ isn't great this year, though, and frankly, I think the biggest testament to the whole Deep Woods Series is that every single release has its contingent of "this is the best one" fanboys.

(Sorry for the double-post; I was playing Destiny 2, so I had to catch up!)

I am always super excited to see people’s takes on different beers. As some of you may remember, I have a bitter sensitivity; so when i add sugar to my coffee, it brings out the flavors I couldn’t taste before when it was too bitter. But, for others it then has become too sweet and hides those flavors.

For me, I don’t feel like I really ever get “sweet” in SJ or VSOJ. I mean, I can see that it is kind of sweet, but that never really crosses my mind. Usually that tobacco and leather flavor is more dominant than anything highlighting sweet to me in the better barleywines that I have had.

So, I’m having trouble keeping up. Are we saying vanilla VSOJ with lactose and dragonfruit is confirmed for next year?

How about as an experiment for next year making two versions of Straight Jacket for release: SJ Sweet and SJ Dry? Also, the more people talk about different options for Barleywines, I'm going to double down on a previous post that the Deep Woods release should have all the stouts out in winter and all the barleywines out in the summer. Much easier on the wallet.

check out Rev's instagram story. they go into detail about the collab with Hop Butcher, looks like it will be released 8/17. two beers, an 9% imperial hazy IPA and a west coast IPA using the same mash.

Screw our wallets, just do a monthly release of SJ variants next year:

    Straight Jacket
    Cherry Jacket
    Caramel Jacket
    VSOJ
    Honey Jacket
    Iced Jacket (Winter Jacket?)
    Coffee Jacket
    Strawberry Jacket
    Pumpkin Jacket (Fall Jacket?)
    DBVSOJ
    Peppermint Jacket
    Orange Jacket

*please note that I'm being facetious - I know grabbing sarcasm out of text is difficult...

I'd drink all of those. My wallet wouldn't be able to survive the endeavor though.

Pumpkin and peppermint should definitely never be a thing.

Of course, if it is, my wallet will be saved. I find these two flavors in beer to be as awesome as being gagged with a spoon. (I accidentally typed gagged with a poon at first. Not sure how that would happen, but that doesn’t seem half bad!)

I'd like to request a straight jacket aged in barrels that recently housed Deth's Tar.....It worked great for GI.

See the asterisk at the bottom

But I agree with you, I do not enjoy those two flavors in any beer I've tried

Now that they're in the business of collabs with bands, they could do one with Blink 182 and call it Take of Your Pants and Straight Jacket.

What makes a barrel dry and what makes a barrel sweet?

The base beer that goes into the barrel. Straight Jacket is multiple brews/recipes, some sweeter some more dry, then blended after aging

Thanks. I interpreted the earlier post like the barrels were the difference. This really had me questioning things. It makes much more sense that base SJ is the difference.
