I was a big fan, but I like Cognac a lot, so YMMV

Wondering the same thing. I love Straight Jacket but have never had Mineshaft Gap, so if there isn't a big difference why drop an additional $15 on MG when I can pick up SJ pretty much any time, any where? Based on the cited Noel article it sounds like they're significantly different . . .

It’s a huge difference. Cognac barrels are nothing like bourbon barrels. I personally love MG but I also enjoy cognac as well. Maybe find a buddy and split a 4-pack to see if it’s your thing

I've had both the '18 and '19 version of MG (draft pours at the pub). Personally, I much preferred SJ. But I'm gathering that I'm not really a cognac fan. So I'm going to follow what others have said, if you enjoy cognac, you will probably really like MG. If you're like me, my money is better spent on SJ.

That said, I will still probably get one 4 pack just because Rev hasn't given me a reason not to the past few years.

I still have 3 cans left. Drank one just a couple weeks ago and thought it was fantastic. I think it has mellowed a bit, but there is a huge difference between Mineshaft and SJ. The cognac barrels turn the base beer into something completely different.

Buy at least a 4 pack of everything and split 2-2 with a buddy when you aren’t sure and get a full 4 when you are. It’s a happy way to Deep Woods!

My memory was that Mineshaft Gap came off as a much more pronounced booziness and not quite as sweet as SJ, though with their blending that may change this time. The barrel doesn't give the same kind of strong vanilla/spice/coconut character that bourbon does, instead more tannic/fruit/oak. I think for me, Id rather just have straight jacket and the price doesn't hurt.

Open offer to anyone in this thread to split a 4 pack of MG and DB VSOD with me.

I do appreciate all of the reviews and thoughts from everyone in this thread. I'm still very intrigued by Mineshaft Gap and may pull the trigger regardless. I am between MG and DB VSOD but I've had DB VSOD before on tap at Rev and while I liked it a lot was not blown away. I personally have generally enjoyed regular DT more than DB VSOD for whatever reason. Again, not that DB VSOD is bad or anything.

For me, Mineshaft was good, not great. Similar to @mbockstruck30 my money is better spent on SJ, but I'll still be good for a 4 pack.

On the SJ front, drank a can of 2020 last night. Great as always and at a reasonable price, but it appears to be missing something this year. Can't quite put my finger on it yet. I'll just have to drink more to get to the bottom of this mystery...

I agree with this description - I just liked it, whereas it seems like it wasn't your cup of barleywine
Agreed - I have preferred regular Deth's Tar in the past - its odd though because I think VSOJ is much better than regular straight jacket (and regular straight jacket is still great).

100%. But I did really like Boss Ryeway, which was finished in Armangac barrels, so I'm thinking maybe I should give Mineshaft Gap another try.

I also wasn't in love with DBVSOD initially, but I had my last can sometime a couple months ago and was absolutely blown away by how much I liked it.

Definitely looking forward to that interview!

Drinking a Cafe Deth right now. It's just so damn good.

I let this thread guide me through the ultimate first world problem of beer budgeting and the voice of responsibility in my head saying "you can either stock up on Revolution this month or enter the BA Cuppa lottery, but not both." The decision was made while being stared down by a pack of Deth by Cherries for $35.99. Rev it is. Although it appears the general public pre-orders next week are probably going to go on sale while I'm working, so hopefully they last until I'm free that day.

I don't think you'll regret Deth by Cherries, it's honestly one of the best fruited stouts I've ever had.

Mineshaft Gap will be noticeably better than last time, just like how most things from 3 years ago have improved considerably. If you loved it last time, you won’t be disappointed and it should be much more so ready out of the gate where as the last one got much better over time. Also, Cognac barrels are silly expensive, like 3-4X bourbon...

Side note: this years regular old Ryeway is absolutely insane and the best DWS I’ve had so far this year, though regular old $25 Deth was a close second.

That is not a side note.
    Any notes on DB VSOD?
