Hi everyone. I was lucky enough to be one of the ten people who were winners of the writing contest Rev posted on Instagram and got a few samples of Deth's Tar, Cafe Deth, and Deth by Raspberries from them Monday and was invited to a walkthrough virtual event. Tonight there was a call with Jim Cibak (Head Brewer), Marty (Secretary of Lumber), and @BeerCruncher to go through the lineup. I had already gone through and done my review/tasting notes but wanted to add a few more interesting bits from the call. Hope you enjoy.

For Deth’s Tar and Cafe, it is Rev’s biggest blend comprising 12 unique batches aged in 333 a wide ranging bourbon and rye barrels from all the big name distilleries. The final blend of both sweet and dry components range in age from 7 to 8 months all the way up to 2 and a half years and comes in at 14.8% ABV. Deth by Raspberries uses a different blend of base stout owing to the fact that Rev knows they’re adding in sugars from the raspberry puree that end up pushing down the ABV to a pedestrian (by Deep Wood standards) 11.8%.
    Deth's Tar
Pours a pitch black but not what I’d call on the thick side. The head quickly dissipates. I’d recommend letting this warm up a fair amount as initial aromas and taste are definitely more apparent when not at fridge temps. After coming up to temp, you get your very typical barrel aged stout notes of oak, bourbon, vanilla, and coconut, but this year’s batch has a distinct rich chocolate and fudgy note that I don’t remember previous year’s having. The first sip gives off a much richer taste than the pour would indicate and it’s incredibly easy to drink. I compared the 2021 Deth’s Tar to a 2020 and this version is much less roasty and has a ton more deep chocolate notes. Overall this is yet another great version of Deth’s Tar and in that comparison to 2020 clearly outshines it for me.
    Cafe Deth
Cafe has the same pour as Deth’s Tar but you also get faint notes of coffee when poured cold. Again, let it warm up. Cafe more than any other Deth’s Tar release for October needs time to let all the nuanced aromatics and flavors release. Rev used a unique coffee blend from their friends at Dark Matter to create this year’s Cafe with two primary beans from El Salvador and Guatemala and one accent bean from Guatemala that were all washed process. After having the freight train that was Supermassive Cafe Deth that smacks you over the head (in a good way) with coffee and espresso flavor, Cafe has more subtle coffee notes from the light roasted beans that were conditioned on the beer for about a day. One thing that I have observed with Rev coffee beers is any lack of green pepper or off-tasting notes, which is one thing their team concentrates so much on during the development process where they include the Dark Matter team. Cafe tastes like the perfect combination of a coffee soaked baker’s chocolate brownie that has a super creamy feel and perfect carbonation almost like the best and richest cold brew you could ask for. Maybe one of these days, Rev will do a nitro version for a one off at the brewery.
    Deth by Raspberries
I’m just going to be upfront. Deth by Raspberries rules. It’s a fancy fucking raspberry sherbert that’s been dipped in bourbon and swirled in chocolate syrup. The smell is fantastic. Just like fresh picked raspberries. The acidity of the fruit really shines through like Deth by Currants did. This is a changeup in the Deep Woods lineup and is always welcome on nights you feel like something different from a barrel aged stout. In my mind, this rivals Backyard Rye. I missed out on Deth by Plums but this has been my favorite fruited stout Rev has done.

PS - The new can artwork and font rules. Can't wait to see the rest of the lineup next year.

Thanks for the read and congrats on getting selected! Semi-related note, did you submit a letter to the 2019 Prop Day?

This is something I've always admired about their coffee beers, and have often wondered why other breweries struggle with this so much.

lol don't get me started. Yes I did but wasn't selected.
From the call they said they taste a lot of different coffees conditioned on beer and that it's important to not over extract so about 24 is a good time to get the flavor/aroma without any of the off tastes

Great question. I think at least part of the answer has something to do with restraint, and a "less is more" approach. Less time in contact with the beans (< 24 hours) does not make for as punk rock of a story, but results in a MUCH better, more reliable product, especially over time.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited too, but I'm disappointed it won't see distro. I'll have to trade for some, I guess.

Good BA raspberry stouts are my favorite fruited beers, but not all of them are good. Hailstorm did a really great job on Vlad Raspberry and Lookin' Good, and Clare's Thirsty is good too. I just hope the raspberry isn't too tart on this one, that's the danger.

Yeah, from memory, I thought all the fruited deths always saw distro, and I'm a little disappointed this one won't. I have to make decisions, though, as the stout craze this time of year always costs me a bunch of money, and with a vacation to Phoenix in a couple weeks, the budget is smaller than normal.

The last two fruited deths saw distro, but not all.
Here is the history of the fruited 12oz cans...

    No distro:

    Deth by Cherries 11/17/2017
    Deth by Currants 11/16/2018
    Strawberry Jacket b1 7/19/2019
    Strawberry Jacket b2 11/15/2019
    Mixed Berry Ryeway 7/17/2020
    Strawberry Jacket 7/16/2021
    Deth by Raspberries 10/15/2021
    Blackberry Finn 11/19/2021

    Limited distro:

    Code Switch 10/19/2018
    Deth by Plums 10/18/2019
    Deth by Cherries 11/20/2020

Yeah, I'm kind of wondering if this will be one of those ones that they say won't hit distro but then pops up in distro. I still see Deth by Cherries on shelves so either they scaled back supply significantly on Raspberries, or more than likely are just trying to get a lot of the stock out of the warehouse on better margins.

Yeah - a quick search on Binny's site for 'deth' shows quite a few Deep Wood 4pks lying around from last year. Pretty nice to see great beer widely available for a long time.

Excited to Try Rapberry. Deth by Currents is my favorite stout from Rev. Plum….was not.

But if it’s being compared to Currants In any way, I’m very excited.

Currents was GOAT of the fruit BA stouts. BTW - I’m old and haven’t left the house in ages, they got food trucks at the taproom during these releases?

edit - never mind, saw on boomerbook - see y’all there, I’ll be the quiet white guy keeping to himself in the corner.
