Had one last night and definitely agree. Maybe THE best ever, but in the team photo for sure.

As for Vanilla Deth, if you want in your face vanilla this ain’t it. If you want incredible balance where the vanilla compliments the barrel and you can taste everything that’s going on …. Ho. Ly. Crap.

Rev continues to give no quarter.

    Variant thoughts...

V.S. Vanilla Deth Jacket (aka V.S. Vandy Jacket, at least on the draft board) blew me away. Even less reliant on 'niller flavors than Vanilla Deth, this was a rich, complex stunner that had me returning multiple times. Best in show, for me

V.S.O. Flak Jacket was really tasty, but tasted a touch oxidized to me. Probably just my #trashpalate, but it was still extremely enjoyable.

Rum Barrel V.S.O.J. was too sweet for me. It was interesting, but one was more than enough.

Side note: Open Slay is great. Winter Warmer meets Biere de Garde, it had strong Xmas vibes.

Dammit, I forgot I was going to grab a crowler of that when I was up there.

I am REALLY appreciating all the feedback in this thread. The one item that I keep noticing is that I feel like everyone is suggesting that the level of vanilla in vanilla Deth is such that is basically perfectly compliments the barrel to highlight the natural vanilla that exists, rather than tasting like a vanilla stout.

I like that, buuut, if this assessment is true, this kind of makes me feel like this should actually be the base DT rather than the base DT. If it is not really noticeable enough to be a vanilla beer, and instead it just accents…Does that make it a great beer or a great vanilla beer?

Splitting hairs, but a fair question to ask I think.

The vanilla is certainly noticeable and different enough from regular Deth to consider it a vanilla stout, but in a more old-fashioned way. If you go in expecting a marshmallow you'd be sorely disappointed. I feel vanilla is very consistent with what I've come to expect (and enjoy/prefer) with the Deep Woods series.

In the end I'm glad to have my 4-pack so I can rotate in something slightly different. However, when I go back for more I'll just be getting original Deth. I realize costs are based on ingredients, and vanilla has gotten pricey, but IMO this one doesn't warrant it's $40 premium. I'd have felt better with it at $30 like Cafe.

I thought that this iteration of Vanilla Deth was quite a bit better than their last one. Tasty beer, and glad I ended up grabbing 2x 4packs. Subtle vanilla. Not overpowering, but you definitely know it's a nilla beer. Especially as it warms.

This Vanilla Deth is so much better than the 18'. I think this base DT is much more chocolatey/smoother/more rich and less roasty which helps accentuate the vanilla more. It's certainly not a vanilla bomb, but you can absolutely tell that vanilla was added. I only got one 4-pack and will probably get another.

3rd place- V.S.O. Flak Jacket- didn't love this one. It was muddled to me.
2nd place- Very Special Vanilla- Very close to the best variant. The Sherry barrel was perfect in this and amazing vanilla notes. Silky texture. Very smooth!
1st place- Rum Barrel V.S.O.J. The smoothest VSOJ that I have ever had. The depth of caramel and oak was crazy. Rum added a nice coconut compliment to the barleywine malt profile flavors without being boozy like most rum barrel stouts tend to be.

No, no, no, let's not get carried away. :grimacing:

I agree that the vanilla in Vanilla Deth is less in-your-face than what's fashionable these days among pastrybois, but I still personally like Deth's Tar much more than Vanilla Deth. If you like vanilla, the latter is a good option while still being balanced, but for me, I feel like the vanilla undercuts some of the other Deth's Tar character that I love.

I know nothing about Binnys but I'm in Madison WI and we got Vanilla Deth and SJ on Friday, the same day as the official release which I've never seen before and which seems pretty weird.

Hey-hey, I couldn't be happier for you! This has happened before, but Revolution has asked distributors to not distribute until the following week. Their mistake is your win!

@BeerCruncher, can we expect SJ to land around the city (thinking particularly at Binnys) before the holiday?

The Taproom is closed tonight and tomorrow...which means when they re-open Wednesday, all 3 variants should still be there!!

Step 1: unsuccessfully negotiate a crowler fill

Step 2: enjoy more VS Vanilla Jacket on draft

    Step 3: ????

    Step 4: profit*

*not actually, i will be poorer.

Won’t go into all the what’s and whys, but it is clear that the Rev beer locator no longer works the way it used to. Definitely hasn’t for several months now at least.

Well, it's less than 3 weeks until the next release.
BUT it's MORE than 9 weeks until the last one.

Hoping SJ and Vanilla hit the northern suburbs today or tomorrow. Really don’t want to fight the crowds on Friday for it

Thanks guys, turns out that if you browse websites almost entirely on muscle memory, a pandemic throwing your whole routine to hell messes that up, too!

Upside to spending less time on the site is 90% less beer fomo, though...
Glad I could foil your nefarious money saving plans! Did you have it/like it?

I had one of my last Code Switch cans a day or two ago (admittedly hovering around room temp a fair amount of the time), and at the very least I preferred BF to that.
