I searched the forum for stuff specific to RI, and the most recent post with RI in the title was about 2 years old.
So let's get a thread about beer here in RI going. Any thoughts about best breweries, favorite beers, whatever.

Some of my favorite breweries are Shaidzon and Tilted Barn. I like Proclamation a lot too, especially Etherious.

I think Long Live makes arguably the best beers in the state with Tilted Barn in a close second place.

As for bars... Bayberry is the undisputed champion in my book.

    This.

@Rysk22 and I have bumped into each other before on the subject of how great Long Live is.
@davlo if you haven't checked them out, do so soon.

Tilted Barn is obviously great. I can't wait to see the new taproom.
    Proclamation is very good too.
Buttonwoods is newer on the scene and they are doing some great stuff too.

I think you can hit Long Live, Buttonwoods, and Proclamation in under 20 minutes. Good things do come in small packages.

There's a lot of smaller places that I enjoy. The Avery and PTX (same owners) usually have some good stuff on-tap and also have nice whisky selections. Julians and Pizza J (same owners) have good food and good taps. Not really up on the Newport/Aquidneck Island scenes anymore but used to really enjoy Pour Judgement. Norey's has a good taplist and I've heard good things about Malt.

I've been to Long Live and my impression was that it was 99% IPAs, which is a beer I like but I like a bit of variety too. Maybe need to check them out again.

True. Their variety isn't lagers and pilsners either. It is more of the "new brewery" variety of sours and sweet stouts.

Beer on Earth is worth stopping into if you're in Providence. They make IPAs like everyone else, but I really dug their dark lager and pils. Buttonwoods is easy to hit on the way to/from Proc as well and they've typically got a good variety. IPA-centric sure, but some solid saisons and lagers, typically a stout or two as well.

Definitely agree on Long Live - they make very good IPAs and decent pastry stouts. Their pilsner was brutal.

There's also the German club in Pawtucket - only open Friday evenings but great traditional German food and killer lager.

And I'd add that Bayberry is good in terms of variety (only place locally that gets Fox Farm, Trillium, etc.) but their pricing is obscene for that neighborhood so I rarely if I ever go there. I'd rather go to Pizza J.

I need to hit more of the locals. I finally made it to Twelve Guns Brewing in Bristol and got the last 4-pack of stout. I need to try more.

I hit Long Live a few weeks ago and they had a good selection.

What is with the buzz marketing for The Sawmill restaurant?

I guess that’s the price we pay for using Post Image. What image posting service is everyone else using?

Not sure where else to put this question, but since Great Woods is close to Providence, here I go. We’re going to a concert at GW in June and looking to make a bit of an afternoon of it. Would probably like to hit some brewery and somewhere with good food and beer for an early dinner. I’m assuming everything near the venue is chain crap, so Providence seems like a reasonable alternative. Any suggestions?

I may actually advise against Providence, only because you will be overshooting Great Woods by a fairly good distance if coming from Maine. If you have the time great, but otherwise...

For brewery taprooms, if coming from I-95 you could stop at Trillium Canton (only if a weekday, weekends I don't find as pleasant), Castle Island and Wormtown's newish location at Patriot Place.

If going I-495, I'd recommend Hudson and Medusa Brewing taproom paired with Rail Trail Flatbread Co. down the block. Also, the British Beer Co in Franklin is part of a mini chain with pub food but they always have the best beer selection in quite a radius. (Right now they have Commonwealth, Aslin, Hoof Hearted, Finback, Proclamation, CBS, Hopslam, etc etc).

If you do end up going to Providence for dinner, I'd probably recommend Bayberry Beer Hall #1 with Rogue Island just behind. As @Mikecap mentioned the prices are high which is why I'm not there a lot as a local, but in addition to the beer selection their kitchen is top notch. Actually may like the Rogue Island food better, but their draft selection is not quite as good.

Is Long Live ever on tap anywhere besides the brewery? I don't recall ever seeing it anywhere.

As an aside I was checking Bayberry to see if they had it and saw they currently have 16 ciders on tap. Is that a normal thing? It seems absurd

I did exactly that between long live, buttonwoods and proc and it was awesome. Personally, i think Long Live is making some of the best NEIPA in new england. Ddh Black Cat was the best beer ive had in a long time

it’s not beer-centric , but there’s a great restaurant in Mansfield called Cibbo Motto. Very tasty food and pretty close to your concert

I rarely get down there even though they are probably my favorite brewery. The timing worked out and I happened to be in the area shortly after DDH Black Cat was released. Absolutely incredible. It might have been my beer of the year last year.
I believe that was the time Buttonwoods had Hip Hop is Dead in cans and I was able to grab that too. I really lucked out.
I will be back in Providence on Friday March 13th and I am hoping for similar luck with drops.
It looks like Buttonwoods knocked it out of the park with Making a Statement but that won't last until I get down there.

Love their hoppy beers and imperial stouts but Buttonwoods is really pumping out the lagers, good job by them. Today they're releasing baltic porter in cans, fermented with Bohemian lager yeast and conditioned for 6 weeks. The description is light ("only" 7%) but roasty with chocolate and caramel flavor, sounds great. My favorite lager by them is the kolsch but it never seems to stick around for me to get anything other than draft.

I've seen them on tap at Bayberry BEFORE but it is a rarity I believe. Seems like their collabs are bound to make it on tap, a keg of the Goodfire and Deciduous collabs last year then Vitamin Sea collab this year showed up there.
