I will be moving to Newport in the bear future and I was wondering what the craft scene is like out there? I've been blessed to live in San Diego and I am blessed craft beer wise here! What are some good craft bars? What are some of the big breweries available there? Best liquor stores? Would love tips and help settling into a new craft scene!

Also, I've checked seek a brew and it seems lots of breweries go to Mass. and not RI! Can you still get most brews or do you have to go across the border? Also founders is one of my favorite Non west coast breweries can you get there stuff in RI?

    Cheers!

Luckily newport is probably the best spot in RI for good craft, there are a few other good craft bars here and there in RI but newport has quite a few options that you can walk to and from easily. I spend probably half of the summer weekends and a few weekdays in newport with some friends that live there, and pretty often during the winter as well, so perhaps I'll run into ya some time. Enjoy the ocean state!

Basically you just moved to a black hole of distribution in comparison to San Diego.

Also Track 84 in Warwick has the best taplist in the state. Kind of a hike from Newport though.

    Good luck!

I hate to break it to you man, but you're going to be very disappointed.

Rhode Island's best bottle shops, bars and breweries are nothing special. More over, most of the half way decent places in this state exist in the Providence area, which is about 40 minutes from Newport.

there are what 3 good craft bars in providence? one/two in warwick and a decent one in pawtucket? I guess if your talking bottle shops providence has nikkis and a couple other good ones but bridge and island liquors are both stepping their game up, I wouldnt say that providence is vastly better than newport personally.

To be clear, I never said anything about the amount of craft beer destinations in the Providence area vs. the Newport area. I was talking about the quality of the places. Nevertheless, let's stick with the topic of quantity: Even if your conservative estimate of 5-6 good craft spots in the Providence area were true (which in my opinion, it isn't), could you name 6-7 better spots in Newport than the 5-6 you're thinking about in the Providence area?

nope, there are only 3 places in newport, i was saying the statement that it was vastly better isn't necessarily true. RI in general isnt that great for craft, I think we can agree on that.

RI might not be great, but there is plenty craft brewing going on in the north east. You might have to skip over the boarder to MA frequently.

But be warned, a lot of stores stock stuff from your town out here. 90% of the time it sits on the shelves forever. Forget about drinking the stuff from home that you like and get into the local scene.

I find the beer scene in Rhode Island to be quite good. I read about people in all these states with 1 bottle limits of BCBS and other beers. I haven't had trouble getting any limited releases beers in RI. In fact, it got the to point last year where I had to stop myself from buying KBS.

Newport is close enough to the MA boarder that the selection of beers within a 20 minute ride almost doubles. Newport has many good restaurants and bars with craft beer offerings. Providence has a few as well, more than many places. The food offerings in Newport and Providence are much better than offerings at almost every single city of comparable size.

I find things to be pretty good in RI.

RI isn't the best beer state in New England, but it's still not bad and improving rapidly. Remember that the whole state of RI is much smaller than most counties in CA, and all of NE covers a lot less space than southern CA. You won't have to go far for more than Newport offers.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. A 40 minute drive in southern Californian could be considered going around the block.

I think that a day trip to Westerly, RI. is a good choice. You can hit up Cotrell Brewing in Mystic, CT(decent), then over to Beer'd Brewing in Stonnington, CT (very good), then 5 minutes over to Grey Sail Brewing in Westerly ( pretty good), and then 1 minute down the road is The Malted Barley- which is a beer bar and pretzel joint. good thing is that any of these breweries will fill any growler.

I have a friend heading home for Christmas to RI. She said she'd be willing to bring me back stuff to Alabama. Anything in particular I should ask her to seek out? Probably something easy to come across. Don't think she's going on the same kind of trips for beer that I usually go through

They try to avoid leaving at all costs. I always thought driving to Providence was a hassle as it was such a long trip.

I commute from PVD to Newport every day. It's not that big of a deal.
