Hello fellow BA's. I am coming home on R&R from Afghanistan next week for a much needed 2 week vacation. I have a friend, and fellow Marine Corps brother, who lives in Richmond who graciously volunteered to send me a big "welcome home" beer package for my arrival home next week. He already went to The Veil for me last week and picked up some Coconut Hornswoggler and Crucial Taunt to send me but he wants to send me a few more. I'm not sure what is local to that area (I live in South Georgia) so can any locals make some recommendations that I can relay to my buddy? Some beers that I can't find in Georgia? I'm a IPA and sours kind of guy. Thanks in advance!!!
Triple Crossing is putting out great IPAs, the Answer for just about everything else. Haven't been to Final Gravity yet, but everything I hear about them is great too. Enjoy your leave
I actually got Triple Crossing Falcon Smash in a trade last year and LOVED IT but I completely forgot it was a Richmond brewery. Thanks for reminding me. I'll definitely put Triple Crossing on the list. Are the ones you mentioned brewery only or can he find them in a bottle shop? I think he's trying to hit up a bottle shop for the remaining list I send him.
If he doesn't mind sending 32 oz crowlers, have him grab one or more of The Answer IPAs from the brewery.
I don't know if I want to take the gamble with shipping growlers honestly. I have a window of time that I "should" be arriving back in Georgia, but things change pretty rapidly over here. I was stuck in Kuwait for 8 days coming over, and another week in Kandahar before finally arriving here. Not sure if growlers would hold up if I happen to get delayed.
I think he is talking about crowlers (essentially 32 oz single use cans that are filled/sealed at the brewery/bar). They should hold up fine.
If you're looking at crowlers, The Answer does them for their IPAs always as stated ^^. They also do crowlers of their hyper fruited Berliners 2x/week. Not sure how well those ship - have not heard personally of explosions but beware of that. Triple Crossing had a can release on Friday, they are doing crowlers of those beers (2 new DIPAs, new fruited Berliner). If you liked Falcon Smash you'd probably like what they're doing on the DIPA side. Veil also has a release tomorrow - 2 returning DIPAs and a new (pineapple) fruited gose. If you like the idea of fruited berliners/goses, fwiw, I'm team TC Fruited Berliners > Veil Fruited Goses.
A few suggestions below. The IPAs I listed should be pretty fresh and can be found in ahops around RVA Alewerks - Lover's Greed (Wild / Sour) Commonwealth - Papi Chulo IPA Commonwealth - Big Papi DIPA (I prefer this over Papi Chulo) Reaver Beach - Hoptopus DIPA Reaver Beach - They do very good sours too Kindred Spirit - Headspace Three Notch'd - Minute Man IPA Maine - Lunch As other stated above, The Answer, Final Gravity and Triple Crossing would be worth it for Crowlers if your buddy is willing to go to their locations.
Awesome suggestions man. I was completely unaware that Maine Lunch made it down to VA. I'll definitely put that on the list. I love Reaver Beach stuff. I visited the brewery last year. They had a strawberry sour on tap that was amazing. I will pass this list along. Where can Maine Dinner be found specifically?
Dinner is brewery only. Someone above mentioned they haven't heard of any problems with exploding Answer Joose crowlers, but I have seen a few pictures on facebook of this happening. They're loaded with sugar, I wouldn't risk it unless you know that it can be kept cold for less than a week or so, or it can be kept in a place that won't be ruined if it gets sticky fruit syrup all over it.
Oops, I said Dinner but I meant Maine Lunch! Thanks for pointing that out. So getting back to that question, where can Maine Lunch be found in Richmond?
So he ended up going back to The Veil yesterday afternoon and picked up some beer for me. Kinda bummed I'll miss out on the Maine Lunch BUT I will never be upset about receiving beer from The Veil. Thanks again everyone!!!!!!!!
He probably made a much better decision for you, no guarantee Lunch was even around, it doesn't just sit around for very long, it's pretty randomly/sporadically available. Idonteverever is one of the Veil's better DIPAs IMO.
