Leaving Cincy and heading to Richmond for the first time next week. I have a bunch of the collab magnums from Stone that I have to pick up. I should get there mid-day on Thursday and have until Sunday when my daughter drives up from Hilton Head and joins me. I plan on hitting Veil first to see if any cans are left and then over to the Answer for crowlers. Also plan on Hardywood on Saturday for the Rum Barrel GBS release. Just recently heard about Triple Crossing and know nothing about their releases. What is the magic day(s) and what else do I need to know? (Will get to Licking Creek as well.) Need to have everything scouted out by the time my daughter and her boyfriend get there Sunday. This is new territory for them as well and we plan to drink our way through town, eat good local food, and see what games we can Sunday afternoon/evening. I should be able to hit up Jackie O's Wednesday night on my way down and will bring other beers for trade/bottle sharing if anybody is interested.
Skip Lickinghole and go to Final Gravity after Veil & TC. TC releases cans on Friday usually. Luch/dinner at Mekong before Answer and you are golden.
^^^that is the right plan. Just back form there this weekend and had been several times previously. Went to Final Gravity for the first time and it lived up to the hype - very good beer!!! I suggest you definitely stop in at Hardywood as it is close by and it is GBS (Ginger Bread Stout) season for them. They release a new variant each weekend from now thru mid-Dec. Great stuff!!! Enjoy!
Just got back from Richmond for the marathon (wife ran not me). The Answer- great food, an absolute ridiculous quality of beer. From the sours to the stouts, all are really really stellar. I've never seen a brewery that has so much diversity with so much quality. And the service and prices are great. The veil- this is a no frills taproom. No tvs, no hand holding, it's dark ,just get in line, get your beer, and drink it. it's a cool little spot with the obvious Veil quality. On fri and sat the line was usually about 5-10 people deep at all times but it moves fast...and you can order a couple at a time. Drank the hell out of White Ferrari. Triple C- only spent about 30 min if that at the downtown location. good stuff on draft, but we didn't stay that long. Whereever I may Roam was on and tasting good. Ardent Brewing- would not recommend. how do these guys stay in business with the Veil right around the corner? Beer is very very average. Food wise: -Weezie's: great breakfast -Saison Market - had the fried chicken biscuit and gravy and it was ridiculous -secret sandwich society- loved it but probably better for lunch
Never heard of Resolute Day. Just started looking into it. How good is it? 4 Hour round trip sounds like a bit of a haul on Saturday when there is so much else in Richmond.
Your instinct is right. You don’t wanna be messing around with that drive after a fest featuring an imperial stout. You’ll be plenty busy — and plenty happy — in RVA. — Guy Who’s Originally from Central VA
Yeah don't go to Resolute day. I would recommend hitting up Vasen and Ardent while you're in Scott's Addition for The Veil, otherwise I think you have a good plan.
I'd suggest adding Lunch.Supper to your list of potential dining options. It's all of 3 blocks from Veil, and has great food. www.lunchorsupper.com
Love all of these recommendations. I am a foodie as much as a beer nerd so really appreciate the restaurants as well as the breweries. Hope to meet some of you along the way. Bringing a bunch of beer with me to hopefully trade or share.
Brenner's Pass is also great in Scott's Addition, good nice dinner option. I remember their beer list being pretty good too.
I definitely second the Lunch/Dinner rec and I have heard good things about Brennar Pass, but I would also make sure to get out of Scott's Addition and explore the rest of Richmond. Scott's Addition is not the most charming neighborhood. Go check out Main Street in the Fan neighborhood, get a pizza at 8 1/2, and just yelp around the neighborhood.
