My nephew lives in a suburb of Richmond & he is coming to visit us in Buffalo NY in mid October. I told him to bring a mixed case of local beers. I would reciprocate with Buffalo beers when he drove home. He responded with "Tell me what you want". OK BA's-what do I want ? Thanks

"I'm hungry. What should I eat?" You're bound to get X different answers (where X = the number of people who respond). I'm sure some local folks would be able to help but a solid starting point -- i.e., do you like pale ales? lagers? sours? only barrel-aged monsters? -- probably would help. My beloved Commonwealth has plenty of great beer so we want to get you what you truly want!

Heck, your nephew could fill a case just by getting a couple of beers from each of the breweries in and around the city! That would actually be pretty cool.

most of the better beers made around RVA aren't bottled.

you could ask for some hardywood, maybe even a special crowler or some licking hole creek. they both have some bottles available and (probably) aren't available in NY

What style do you like? If you want some of the newest releases then Hardywood is releasing their Harvest Pumpkin Ale and RVA IPA (Community Hop IPA) today. Both are in 750. Their Great Return is a really nice IPA as well and available in 16oz cans. Strangeways is releasing Gourd of Thunder Imperial Pumpkin Porter today. A lot of people love that beer! If Triple Crossing has any bottles of their IPAs then I would definitely grab a few of those. He can get Crowlers (32oz cans) at The Answer of their beers. They are probably producing the best IPAs at the moment. Grand Larceny is really good. Hard in the Paint is another one I have heard is awesome.

That's a wide open questions you posed. A lot of the RVA breweries do not bottle/can as @ncaudle said but if you let us know style then we can maybe direct better. If you would be open to other VA beers available in Richmond there are many good ones out there he cold grab too.

    Thanks for responding.
I am very open to style. IPA's, DIPA, Saisons, Sours and the list goes on. Not a Pumpkin, fruit or "flavored" guy. Does not have to be Richmond only. I'm looking for stuff that I can't get at home (no honey I am not talking about you).

    As far as Richmond bottles:

    Hardywood
    Strangeways
Center of the Universe (technically Ashland, but close enough to RVA for me)
    Legend (for sh!ts and giggles)

Fresh crowlers of Answer Brewpub's IPAs and darker beers from Williamsburg Alewerks. Best beers the entire state has to offer.

I would rather have legends Oktoberfest over anything COTU makes.

Very much this. Additionally, An carries a great selection of guest taps. If Secret Admirer from Alewerks is still on I'd get a crowler of that as well.

Someone needs to make Short Pump Cask Ale, Bumpass Country Mild, and River Road Red.

Had some Answer IPA's this past weekend and they really were fantastic. Larceny and Grand Larceny really reminded me of that super juicy taste that you get from a good northeast IPA.

I didn't know. I just love some of the old names in the area. It's Three Chopped in Richmond and Three Notched in Charlottesville (George Washington's survey mark).
My Dad was from Richmond and I spent 4 years at The U of R.

I thought Three Chopt and Three Notched were originally different trails, one with vertical marks and the other horizontal?
