The news has already started to make the rounds, so I figured I would post here.

Unfortunately, Ricks will be closing. The last day of business will be on December 31st. It is incredibly sad news, especially for the people still involved. It will leave a gaping hole in the Old Town area, in regards to craft beer. The wine industry has changed significantly over the past 20 years and that contributed to the decision (although it was an array of things that ultimately lead to the decision).

I can say, without a doubt, that the shop helped shape the craft scene in Northern Virginia. I am unbelievably blessed to have been a part of it. The Rick's beer tree has certainly branched out, which will ensure that Ricks and it's former employees will continue to promote craft beer in the area. It is really crazy to see how many former employees have gone on to do great things in our beer community. Keep it up, fellas.

20 years and 2 months isn't a bad run. I am sure I'll see you guys around! And if you know of anyone hiring and they need a beer geek, feel free to BM me

You will be sorely missed. It's a shame that the store only had so much time in the post-John era, because you really had righted all of his wrongs and Rick's had become awesome again as a go-to craft beer store.

I am sad to see it go. I never got up as much in the past couple years once I moved away from Alexandria but it was a great place to have down the street for the three years I lived there. In the past 7 years or so, since Ive been in the area, craft beer in DC went from having only the Brickskeller to craft beer bars popping up all over. Not to mention the new breweries that are around now! Its been quite the transformation and I think Ricks was key in fostering the community.

Thanks for all the hard work,
    Cory

This totally sucks. Rick's was one of my staple bottle shops and it will sad to see it go. Chris (raveskdr) and the rest of the staff were doing great things there. Most importantly, they were very professional, treated customers fairly, and didn't engage in price gouging (unlike Westover Markup). Hopefully another neighborhood shop comes to the Arlandria area!

This is sad news. There was a time when only Rick's and one or two others carried the craft banner. As someone in the industry in NoVA I can say the shop definitely had a positive impact on the craft community.

I have some good memories way back in the day when I lived in Alexandria, I use to stop by there all the time since it was near my old apartment . Bought lots of Spy Valley Sauvignon there, and I'll never forget the rep who was giving samples of Gouden Carlos.. great stuff!!

    Ah Virginia memories!

Chris, this is very sad news. I am shocked. Your knowledge and passion for beer made Rick's a destination for me. Hope you land someplace soon.

No need to trivialize this moment with your gripes about John. I (and many others) have nothing but great things to say about him and the job he did.

This is less about one individual and more about the loss of a true institution for the craft scene in NoVA. "Rick's" is as synonymous with great DC-area craft beer as "Norm's" and "Churchkey." Truly sad to see them go.

Thanks for all you do, Chris, and please pass along our gratitude to the rest of the staff. We will keep all of you in our thoughts through this difficult time.

Sorry to hear this. I only got into Rick's once, but it was a great store.

Wow, that is a bummer. When I lived in Arlington I went there all the time for about 3 years...was definitely my favorite NoVa bottle shop for a while. Good luck Chris.

Missed this thread and was shocked when I stopped by there today. I've been going to Rick's for 12 years, almost on a weekly basis. Really sad to see the store close down. For many years they were the go to shop in NoVa with Norms. Now getting the new releases and really good beer just got a little harder.. Damn.

Hah, yeah. I still go to the Giant over there on occasion. It's incredibly weird. I got a chance to go to Norms today though. It's been a hot second since I've been out there. Nice to talk to Norm. It's just a haul from Alexandria :-/
