I hate to hear another BA has passed. Enjoyed his posts and comments. Godspeed @cavedave. Here's to you brother!
Many folks are mentioning stouts. He certainly liked stouts a lot, but he expressed a lot of love for IPAs, and I felt like (purely subjective on my end) his love came out the most for beers that fit into the Venn diagram of lambic / brett beer / wild ale / American saison. He loved Vermont beers but became more and more focused on what was local to him over all else. Here are some of his favorites but I'm saying this as an observer: Ithaca Super Friends IPA Hill Farmstead Everett, Le Sarrasin, Double Citra Alchemist Heady Topper, Focal Banger Rushing Duck War Elephant Russian River Beatification, Pliny The Elder Kern River Citra Peekskill Kneel Before Zod The Lost Abbey Isabelle Proximus Ithaca Brute Cantillon Fou Foune, Lou Pepe Kriek, Saint Lamvinus Ommegang Three Philosophers Suarez Palatine Pils Fremont Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star Alpine Great Goose Island King Henry Cigar City Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout Southampton Publick House Imperial Russian Stout
Thanks, man! Most of those would be super difficult to find by the weekend, but I do have a Three Philosophers in the cellar. I also have a Lost Abbey Red Poppy, that I'm sure he would have liked, as well. That and probably SN Narwhal, Allagash Gatherwell, and Founders CBS should make for a good night!
This is sad news indeed. As someone new to BA as a member, but someone who was a frequent lurker in the past, I have read a number of Cavedave's posts and always thought he was one of the most interesting contributors, and the "voice of reason" as someone has said earlier.
RIP @cavedave, I never interacted with him personally but remember reading about his health issues over the years. Seemed like a good guy. May good beer flow for you wherever you are.
From some of the posts he had made in the past, he also talked about Plan Bee Farm Brewery beers being one of his favorites, and somewhat local to him.
Several have asked what some of @cavedave 's favorite beers. He posted often in the cellar threads over the years, and this was a very entertaining take on Bourbon County (paired with hash and apple toast!!). He was a big fan of BCBS so I will probably open one this weekend. He also loved Bell's Expedition Stout, saisons from Suarez, Parabola, Cantillon, etc.
Dave posted this about his cellar in the cellar thread in May of 2025: Haha it was well stocked, at one time about 350 bottles, but it's down to about 35 now as I've been drinking it down for the last 8+ years, but only one a month (or fewer) for the last 6 years due to health concerns. My second ex wanted to get the cellar put in to the divorce as an asset she valued at 4K IIRC, but she changed her mind when I lowered my offer for her share of the house by 5K. Still hope to live long enough to finish off all the rest. Final bottle will be a 2009 Super Kitty. Bummed he didn't make it to try that 2009 Super Kitty. If anyone has one (of any age), OPEN IT!
Bummer. What a super nice guy. We met at a release event at Ithaca Beer many years ago and I always appreciated his kind approach on BA.
Very sorry to hear. It’s the first time I was aware of someone who is active on BA passing. Hope the family can find some peace.
Yeah, I remember him signing off at times with, and I paraphrase, "Hope you enjoy a good local beer in your glass."
I remember back in the day, as a newer member, his NBS posts. He made everyone welcome there. After his health issues, I really enjoyed reading his posts in the cellar thread. Not sure my Saturday plans yet, but, if I'm home, I'll raise a stout in his honor. Rest in peace @cavedave .
