So Deep Ellum is gone as of June 7th - Lone Star will be expanding into that space. Hope they keep some of the beer program intact.

Only been to Deep Ellum a couple times, but remember a rather enjoyable afternoon some years ago spent in the outdoor seating area. Had an unbelievably knowledgeable and attentive waiter who guided me through a bunch of great German beers.

Is Lone Star under the same ownership group as Deep Ellum?

I love Lone Star and will hit it up when it’s safe. But Deep Ellum was one of my favorite spots to grab a beer in Boston. I hope they keep the variety of beers of the Deep Ellum side going. I always wanted to be able to eat Lone Star’s menu and order off Deep Ellum’s taplist. Hopefully they make it happen cause I’d crush fresh German kellerbier with some barbacoa tacos year-round.

Correct - I know the Cambridge Lone Star has a better beer program than Allston, but still, this stings.

Smart move, Lone Star will be a more sustainable business model going forward. I’d assume most of the beer program could be kept? Or maybe that relies on folks bellying up to the bar & ordering multiples without food (I know I hardly ever ate there).

Speaking of, the indoor shoulder-to-shoulder bar scene in the Boston area won’t be coming back for quite a while, unfortunately.

    Yes.

I don't live in the neighborhood anymore (nor in the city itself) so I won't be directly impacted but I'll drink to its memory. I always liked their tap lists, especially when they had something on cask.

A huge loss for the Boston bar scene. Will miss those German gravity kegs

Hopefully the Lone Star expansion will recapture some of that magic.

Consolidation of operations are something that I've seen restaurant groups doing. Even Momofuku had to do that while closing their DC restaurant. I imagine that just sourcing the food for one menu will allow for more savings. It makes sense. I didn't get there enough, but I really liked Deep Ellum. I have fond memories of meeting friends there as well as going to an Enlightenment event (Hoffman on cask was a delight). I hope they can keep the beer program going.

Ha! Yeah I was stating the obvious.

Everyone’s all happy set for open air drinking/dining, but what about when it’s 20 degrees in December? Or rainy days?

Bummed to hear this. They had arguably the most smartly curated tap list. And they were the only beer bar that truly gave a damn about lagers. Hoping Lone Star will inherit the beers from DP, but why do I feel like that's not happening...

The tap system is already built out, why would you go backwards? Maybe the list changes a bit to be a little lighter to match the Mexican food, but hopefully we still get plenty of variety. I mean, I like a Mexican lager with tacos but if I can get a real German lager or schwarz with it, I’m going to every time. Same with sour beers instead of margaritas for many.

Obviously still hoping for the beer selection, but I'm scared that this means their brunch is dead too.

I dunno, something about Corona. I don’t buy that beer anyways.

Ha, I thought the same thing today when I was picking up a mobile order at Starbucks. They had the main door opened so it was set up as a service “window”.

I was thinking, “Um, how’s this going to work when it’s cold out?”

I would say Olde Magoun’s cares about lagers too.

A post of theirs was in this Boston.com article.

    https://www.boston.com/news/food-news/2020/05/30/deep-ellum-allston-closing-lone-star

They said this, not sure what a focus on lagers means, hopefully it means all lagers.

I figure they'd leave the tap system, I just suspect it won't be the same type of tap list. I'd expect more Mexican beers, but why does that always have to be at mexican restaurants? I want the same tap list with mexican food. Part of my suspicion comes from the fact that the booze program at Lone Star was quite different, not beer focused and we might see them show off their cocktails more which were also good. But anyway...tough to even think about in today's world.

Ah that's right. I should have said "of places I've been" as I've never been to Magouns! But I'm aware of what they're about, need to make it there.
