The only one I've had that fit's the profile is Night Stalker. Are there any others out there where you've detected almost no coffee flavors? Seems like the hoppier versions, like Stone RIS, have little to no coffee notes.
Old Rasputin comes closest to that description for me. Narwhal also, maybe. I need to try that one again.
I pick up very little coffee from Founders Imperial Stout and Bells Expedition Stout. In fact, I don't remember getting a lot of coffee from the other RIS's I've tried. It seems like American Imperial Stouts are much heavier on the coffee character.
Coffee notes keep me from liking so many beers. Sometimes I wish I could get over my dislike for that flavor.
RIS isn't suppose to be hoppy. You suppose to get strong roasted, malty, burnt flavor. Expedition Stout is more of a Double Black IPA. Way too hoppy. It's actually an American Double Stout, despite of what they say.
I had Sam Smith's IS a few days ago and all I could pick up was dark fruits. No discernible coffee notes.
You found no coffee notes in Stone RIS? Imperial stouts are generally brewed with large amounts of deeply roasted grains, which give the roasted/coffee type flavors. Asking for an RIS without this profile is kind of like asking for an IPA with no hop flavor.
Exactly, I love Stouts and I have yet to have one without coffee notes. Some may have less but all have some roastyness to them which is the coffee part
For those of you who prefer a higher alcohol dark beer with minimal roasty/coffee flavors then perhaps a Baltic Porter is more to your liking? I have had a number of various Baltic Porter beers and I personally have not noted any coffee flavors in those beers. Cheers!
^He said it. I was about to add "If my memory's right, one traditional characteristic of Baltic Porters is that they tend to be low on roasty/coffee notes." Smuttynose Baltic Porter is a good example and very available. Foreign Export Stout is a style where I definitely get some roast, but IMO it balances very well with the dark fruity flavors of the style. Schlafly Export Stout (8%) is still on the shelves and my most-consumed example Have you tried many wee heavies or old ales? If you're looking for all malt without any roasted flavors, you might really like them. Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball, (Possibly still on shelves), Bell's Old Ale (Also possible, use the beerfinder!) and Founders Dirty Bastard (year-round in 6 packs) are some of my favorites of those styles.
Hmmm. I don't have my tasting notes in front of me, but I remember Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti having little coffee notes. Come to think of it, Chocolate Indulgence probably fits that bill too if I remember correctly
Surly Darkness. New Holland Night Tripper. Rogue Double Chocolate Stout. Southern Tier Choklat. I don't taste alot of coffee, per se, in Founders Imperial, but it is very "roasted" to me.
