Will be driving, with usually reasonable wife and often unreasonable kids. Most likely 68-->66-->95-->64. Wondering if there are any good breweries along the way for a quick visit, or bottle shops so I can stock up for the week. Thanks for any feedback.

When you reach Richmond you can always hit up Hardywood, Strangeways and Ardent. They are all 5 minutes off of I-95 and just a couple of blocks from each other. If it isn't a weekend though you need to check their website for hours of operation. The bottles at all 3 will probably be rather limited, but you can always get a growler fill.

I recommend Alewerks in Williamsburg the most. They are also less than 10 minutes off of I-64 and I think their taproom opens at noon (or 2pm) most days and they usually have all their year round stuff available as well as any seasonal releases. They may have Bitter Valentine still around which may be VAs best DIPA (IMHO) when it's fresh.

As far as bottle shops go, I'd hit up Once Upon A Vine in downtown Richmond as they have an awesome selection of local, national and international bottles. They are in a somewhat weird location but they aren't far off I-95 either. Just make sure you google map the north location and not the south one.

    Cheers and safe travels.

When you finally get to your destination, Nags Head, hit up OBX Trio in Kitty Hawk. It's a mighty fine bottle shop (with wine and cheese too). Should be on the west side of the main drag in a lil strip mall area.

There is brand new brewery right off 168 in Chesapeake, http://biguglybrewing.com/ I've heard good things. I agree with Trio, pretty good store. Also check out Chip's Wine and Beer, solid bottle shop, and Outer Banks Brewing Station, solid brew pub.

Anyone know if Wicked Weed widely distributed 'round those parts?

Website ba-lowes, but it is directly on the way, so I might lean out the window and grab a few samples. Thanks.

Unfortunately no wicked weed in the outer banks.
Everyone has it pretty much covered except make sure you stop by obx brewing station (brewpub) during your vacation, they have a little playground outside for the kiddies, decent food, and solid beers.

They distribute in Virginia? Wondering if I could get my hands on some before Outer Banks.

Not in VA. Nothing really on your way will have WW that I know of.

Some good recommendations . Haven't been to Big Ugly yet but I heard that they were just open on weekends for now and they don't have beer to go yet .

Some other options in Chesapeake are Total wine in Greenbriar and Let's talk wine off 168 .

Yeah, website not the best but they keep their FB page up to date. Has about 8-10 beers currently on tap.

So, headed down this week. Anyone ventured to Big Ugly yet? Looks like we'll be doing an overnight in Williamsburg (as opposed to Richmond)--Alewerks was suggested previously and it looks likely that we will pause there briefly. Also read about a Weeping Radish brewery that is on the way, but haven't heard much praise about it.

Big Ugly is ok, it is right off the highway on the way, so very convienent to check out. Definitely stop at Alewerks.

I'm not a fan of Weeping Radish at all, I never recommend it.
