I am heading from School (Terre Haute, IN) to Boston, MA via Latrobe, south of Pittsburgh and was wondering if anyone had any information as a place to buy some beer, a good bar or anything else that may be interesting. Thanks
Wasn't sure if that meant you were headed to Latrobe or just passing through. I'm not from Pittsburgh, but if you're going by and have the time, I'd take a detour, of a bit less than an hour, and head to House of 1000 Beers in New Kensington, PA. Depending on where you're coming through Ohio, you may want to check out how far off course it is to hit Vintage Estate in Boardman, OH. Those are probably the 2 best bottle shops I know of that may not be TOO far off your route. (Both have tap lists on-line as well, though I know VE only updates every 10-14 days and not sure about HOOTB.) As far as bars, I'm only really familiar with the South Side area (Carson St.) of Pittsburgh. If you're looking for for Latrobe (local) help, I'll just butt out and leave it to the PA BAs. Good luck with your hunting on the trip.
Thanks NABS any info helps my planned trip was to go through I 70 but I plan to spend a day and 2 nights in Latrobe and may be able to make a couple small detours. Thank You
It where Rolling Rock was once brewed, and where Iron City is now contract-brewed, but the brewery itself is owned by City Brewing Co. of La Crosse, WI.
If you make it up to Vintage Estate in Boardman, let me know. I'll try to meet ya there and buy you a drink
How far south of Pit will you be? I know there's a Fat Heads there. Haven't been to that one, but the one in Cleveland was awesome. The Head Hunter IPA seemed overhyped to me (though it reminded me of Sculpin, which I also don't care much for). I loved the Voodoo Monkey milk stout (aside from the blatantly racist label) and Texas Brown Ale.
The only thing to be wary about with House of 1000 Beers is 1) they'll have a lot of things you'll want to buy and 2) they'll be very expensive...
Yea turns out that I may be leaving a little later than originally planned and I will probably stop somewhere else for beer that may be a touch closer but thanks for the help.
This is going back a year or so but the best beer bars in town at the time were Zeno's, the Deli(?), and Otto's Brewpub which I think moved into a new space outside of town fairly recently.
Zenos is an excellent bar with a huge beer selection. I also like Otto's if you're looking for a brewpub. As far as bottle places, someone else will have to answer that. If you're going through Altoona, Knickerbocker (beer selection) and Marzoni's (brewpub) are great places.
Zeno's is absolutely worth a stop if you're in town, with a great draft list and an exception bottle selection. The Z Bar (aka The Deli) is also really coming along, and has a great draft list as well. For bottle shops, Zeno's To Go is located just upstairs from Zeno's and while small has a good selection, The Hop Shop under the Deli/Z Bar is excellent and will do growler fills (usually ~3-4 taps I think) and Wegmans is also very good. Also I definitely suggest stopping into Otto's if you're in town, which is a very nice brewpub with great food. Another place that wasn't mentioned is Selin's Grove Brewery, but that's likely a bit out of your way. Definitely a top notch brewery though. When are you passing through? I might be a bit late to the party here..
