New to the site... Taking a road trip from Jersey to New Hampshire in a few weeks. I'm looking for a few breweries to stop at for good new england style IPAs. Tree House is on the list. Looking for some other ideas in southern Vermont or New Hampshire, Mass, or CT. I know there are more than a few, i'm hoping to hit up 2 or 3 total. Thanks
Best bet with this group (and for this region of breweries) is to give exact locations. NJ to NH is pretty ambiguous. You could be heading to Keene or Hampton, Manchester or Plymouth. Especially considering you want to hit "2 or 3" with Tree House (central Mass) as one of them, we can't point you in the right direction with more details.
What Matt said was spot on, definitely need more details. However depending on how long of a trip you are trying to make if I were you I would hit up NEBCO, Treehouse, Trillium in that order on your way to NH. NH has some micro brews popping up here and there, but none of them compares to those three. In my opinion at least.
You can hit both Trillium and Castle Island very easily. They are about 5-10 minutes apart and both right off major highways
I have not been to NEBCo, but with their hours, the waiting at Tree House, and the drive time to Trillium, this seems like a bit much for a single day?
No that's true it would be hard to hit them all in one day, however living in southern NH Trillium is roughly 45 minutes away, so it wouldn't be hard to hit it the next day maybe? Or on the way back, either or.
Trillium no question. Nice restaurant right next to it called Row 34 with great food and beer selections ! Also check out Three Penny Taproom in Montpelier. Waterbury,VT has 5 or 6 AWESOME beer bars with great food
You're not wrong here, but these suggestions aren't really relevant ... Waterbury/ Stowe/ Montpelier are pretty significant detours from a drive from NJ to pretty much anywhere in NH.
Well, at least if the OP ever ventures from NH or Southern VT he or she will be prepared for the long trek across the massive state of VT !
If u head through Worcester, definitely stop at Armsby Abbey for great food and 4-5 Hill Farmstead beers on tap. Also, don't forget that Trillium has 2 locations now which gives u some more options.
Final destination is Hampton NH (south east on the coast). Plan on driving straight up thru CT and MA, i'll pretty much pass right by Tree House. Considering on the way back staying somewhere in southern Vermont, but not set route/plan as of yet.. Is Trillium easily accessible? I won't be that far from there in southern NH. Thanks
If you are not up this way often then a stop at Tree House is a great idea. If you go on Wednesday or Saturday you can be there early and have plenty of time to hit other spots. Either trillium location is easily accessible. You can take a detour from your road trip to the new location in Canton, or you can take the hour or so drive from Hampton to the Fort Point location. Parking tips for Fort Point can be found with a quick search of the NE forum. Otherwise, your destination on the seacoast gives you a ton of other brewery options you should look into. You can take a route through Mass that puts you past Wormtown and Medusa (290/495) or Jack's Abby and Night Shift (90/93). Once in NH there are a bunch of breweries in the seacoast area: Stoneface, Garrison City, Deciduous, Earth Eagle, probably forgetting some. You can also venture just across the border to Maine for Tributary, and for a stop at the 7-11 that everyone loves https://www.facebook.com/7ElevenKittery32530 Hope you have a good trip.
If you're going to be in Hampton, there are a bunch of Seacoast breweries. Not sure if Deciduous falls into "Seacoast" but it should be mentioned. It's five or so miles off the highway.
Yes I believe you're forgetting THE brewery in Hampton where OP is going, Smuttynose Do the tour and tasting (or just the tasting), and grab lunch next door at their Hayseed restaurant. I'm sure I've posted it in other threads but my ideal circular route in the seacoast would be: 1. Smuttynose as I mentioned above. Take 101 W to Exeter/Stratham exit for 108 North. 108N to Newmarket for: 2. Deciduous for samples, selected bottles, and growler fills. FYI NH you can only fill the breweries growlers. Continue to 108 into Durham and pickup route 4 East to Newington for: 3. Stoneface off route 16 (route 4 becomes 16 on the way to Newington) for samples, bottles, growlers. Continue on 16 to Portsmouth for: 4. Portsmouth brewery/Earth Eagle/wherever for food/fills. Back on route 1 South for: 5. WHYM for food/tap list. Continue on route 1 south back to Hampton. I avoided downtown Dover for Garrison because it takes you off the path and I'm not a fan of their pricing model. Your mileage may vary. Enjoy
Good stuff. Got enough to come up with a game plan. Might work the sea coast area with one or two stops in Mass on the way home. Thanks all!
