So, I'm planning a road trip from Ithaca, NY to Wilmington, NC this fall. Trying to plan breweries and/or beer shops to hit up.

I've looked and I see a few big names that are either on the route, or not that far out of the way:
    • Victory
    • Stone
    • Dogfish Head
    • Sly Fox
    • Evil Genius
    • Pizza Boy
    • Weyerbacher
    • High Point
Any others I should think about?

What about beer shops? I'm hoping there will be some monster mega outlet of beer where I can stock op on hard to find stuff. Anyone have some suggestions?

Also happy to take restaurant suggestions. In particular: fine dining, ethnic/exotic fare, gastro pubs, and some really good authentic barbeque!

Good opportunity for in person trades, if anyone wants anything from up my way or on the way.

Some of the breweries you listed would be pretty far out of the way, assuming you're heading south through Harrisburg and then out to 95, and many wouldn't be worth the detour, IMO.

I'd look to do Bullfrog in Williamsport PA, Pizza Boy in Enola PA, Aslin in Herndon VA, and Veil and others in Richmond VA. I'm sure you'd find worthwhile stops in and around Raleigh NC also, but I'm not too familiar with that area.

How far south are you going on I81? Are you talking about High Point in Butler NJ?

Depending on your route after you leave Weyerbacher, Free Will might be on your way.

Sabatini's in Exeter (near Scranton) is an awesome bottle shop.

I'm assuming this is a multi-day trip? Pizza Boy and Stone aren't really on the same route as all the rest. Maybe you can give us a little more info. Are you set on a route? Are there places that are must visits for you? Me personally, I'd rather hit Richmond and Raleigh then go to Philly and Dogfish Head.

If you're going to Dogfish Head, I highly recommend you drive about 45 mins South on 113 to Burley Oak. Dope beers, good vibes. IMO the best beers on the Shore.

if your going through Philly, tired hands and neshaminy creek are both good breweries. Both are just outside city limits

When you get to Wilmington, hit up Broomtail. Super small and well worth the visit.

If you're heading through the Harrisburg area (which I think you would if you're going the most direct way), Selin's Grove is a must.

Once your in Wilmington I would hit up Wilmington Brewing. Good beers and they have a crowler machine as well. If you want a good bottleshop, go to Fermental. It has a great selection of NC stuff. They have some taps there as well.

If you're anywhere near Selin's Grove and they're open, that to me is a no brainer. I love that place.

As far as Wilmington, I've not been to Fermental, but was pretty impressed with Lighthouse Beer & Wine.

I really enjoyed the dogfish head tour. Thought it was definitely worth a stop

I was in Wilmington last week and went to both Lighthouse and Fermental. Fermental has just about anything you could get at Lighthouse but for better prices. Both have taps though which is cool.

    Hey All,

Thanks for all the feedback. This is all really useful and more advice than I anticipated! I can't reply to each and every one of you individually, but I seriously want to thank you all for taking the time to post.

    A few things.

My route is not yet settled. In fact, it's possible I'll end up ditching the road trip and fly instead if I can find reasonable ticket prices. The road trip is primarily to visit family for the holidays, but to save money traveling by car... money I would intend to spend on beer and food! I figured, why spend so much money on plane tickets if I could make a few days trip of it, stay in a hotel for a night or two, and eat out and stop at awesome places along the way and make it an adventure. But that is still "up in the air" (pun definitely intentional). In any case, the exact route I take, if I do this, would probably depend on the places I decide I most want to visit. The original idea was to stop a few days in D.C., though.

Dogfish Head, I know, is probably an eye-roller for some. The way someone from New Orleans reacts when you tell them you're doing a food tour and the first place you mention is Emeril's. But, personally, I've been into craft beer for only a few years, and Dogfish Head were the first beers I had that made me reconsider what beer can/could/should be and to open my mind to things I had never imagined before. Midas Touch was a revelation for me in many ways. So, the impulse to visit there is to "go to the source of where it all began for me" so to speak. That said, it's not written in stone, just a really big draw and obvious choice.

These are great suggestions all. I've taken notes and am doing some googling to learn more about some of these I'm not familiar with. I especially appreciate the beer shop intel. One thing I was hoping for is that someone would say something like "don't you know that Beer-R-Us is only 20 minutes out of the way for you and they've pretty much got anything you could ever want". Heh.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Fermental website is down. But I will stop by both there and Lighthouse while in Wilmington.

I am definitely going to check out Wilmington Brewing Company. They look awesome! Ditto for Broomtail!

As for places on the way, thanks for Selin's Grove and Tired Hands, as those two are high on my list now.

If you really want Dogfish Head and don't want to go too far out of the way, another option might be the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Gaitherburg, MD (just outside of DC). I know it's not quite like going to the brewery, but could be a good compromise if you didn't want to waste precious time that could be spent at other places.

I'd go this route (more direct drive as well) and pick/choose where you want to stop:
    Pizza Boy - Harrisburg PA
    Brewer's Alley - Frederick MD
DFH - Gaithersburg MD (get a meal here...Jumbalia is awesome)
Aslin Brewery - Herndon VA (about 15 min. detour) -
    The Answer/The Veil/MeKong Restaurant - Richmond VA
Wilmington NC - Fermental for muling home bottles (I was here last year and got a bunch of Wicked Weeds)

Good call @bubseymour. I would add Selin's Grove to that route.

I'm not familiar with that brewer, but when I looked it up on Google maps, you are right, its a perfect pitstop as well coming down Rt 15 from Ithica.
