I passed on this in the past because Im not a big pumpkin beer fan so I decided to give it a try this year and wow, I thought it was great. It had something most pumpkin beers are lacking. Its the beer that's for people who dont like pumpkin beers IMO. Yes its better than Pumking (my opinion.)

I have not tried this year but do not think you will find much appreciation for this beer or the brewery in general.

Did you get any barrel characteristics?

i had it on tap last night and it almost tasted like pumpkin beer mixed with a captain morgan and coke... wasn't bad at all though.

I wasnt expecting to get much based on the pricing per quantity but its enough to elevate it over most pumpkin beers.

Oh I never heard of it but now that I did I expect it to be even better than this one.

I had it (ROB) on draft last year and it wasn't profoundly different. I think we said "hmm maybe more vanilla in the flavor?"

Also I like the insta-dump on two roads one post in. This and pumking are probably the only two pumpkin beers I drink on the regular.

I wanna like it because I'm only 2 miles from the brewery and it is local, but I seem to always get a cheap store brand cola taste from it.

I like that it's not over the top, not so in your face, subtle barreling helps as well.

I thought it was good, but just like every other pumpkin in that I get burnt out on them quickly

    It's a pumpkin beer I can actually stomach....so there's that.

i had it at cask republic awhile ago, maybe last year. honestly i thought it was really good. definitely got some barrel and the base beer isn't half bad.

modest praise i guess, but rum barrel aged pumpkin beer (sweetness bomb?) with a low ABV (so how could it be full bodied enough or complex enough to stand up to all the adjuncts and rum?) is a hard sell for me. i'm also not someone who generally considers re-buying a beer unless it's pretty memorable and definitely above average, and i've considered picking up a sixer of this, and wouldn't veto a restaurant / bar if this were the only good thing they had on tap.

6.8% isn't that low for ABV. I think Roadsmary's holds its own against the plethora of other pumpkin beers out there these days. I think Captain Lawrence pumpkin is great for people who don't love pumpkin beers since it's more subtle. Actually, tried Saucony Creek maple mistress the other day and that stuff was delicious for a pumpkin beer.

Somebody left a couple of cans at a party at my place last weekend. Not sure what to do with them. Maybe I'll mix them with the Not Your Father's Root Beer that somebody else left and make a gross cheap soda half-and-half.

I have a soft spot for pumpkins since they were the first "strange" beer I ever tried back when the Beer Works in Fenway was the only game in town, but I don't buy them very often because they're generally better in theory than in practice.

That said I did grab a six of this and thought it was actually pretty good. Not overly sweet or spiced and the base beer is decent if a little bit thin for the style (I'm assuming that's where the soda comparisons come in). I'll be damned though if this ever actually saw the inside of a barrel beyond perhaps sticking the filling hose in one end and out the other on the way to the canning line. Wasn't worth the $12.99 I paid for it so probably won't buy again, but I'll still happily enjoy the rest of the 6 pack over the next couple weeks.

Full disclosure, I've never had the bottled version. On draft a year or so ago it was solid though.

Every year I fall for the pumpkin beer trap. I am usually disappointed by 95% of them, but not Roadsmary. Yes, the barrel character is slight, enough to make an impact on the flavor of the beer though. I think the vanilla is perfect, which is an ingredient that is often overdone. The spices are exactly what I'm looking for in a pumpkin beer. I can appreciate differing palates, and how some people prefer more spice or sweeter, but to me this beer is perfectly balanced. I can safely say that I no longer need to keep trying different pumpkin beers when my local grocery store has it for $10/6-pack.

    This thread IS serious.

For a BA beer it is. Honestly wish it spent more time in the barrel. It's still better than the vast majority of pumpkin beers out there.

not to be that guy but it was AWESOME last year. But this year it tastes lighter, WAY less barrel, and it's honestly a huge disappointment. Maybe it was a bad 12 pack but it tasted like someone swapped it for Shipyard. My new favorite is Pumpkin Down from Ballast Point. Scotch ale smoke and a bit of pumpkin spice...mmm
