I do love me a wide variety of stouts, but lately I have really been in dire need of a roasted tasting straight-up stout.

I found one that really fit the bill perfectly, but it's difficult to get my hands on: Plead The 5th.

Are there any recommendations for something that tastes very similar to PT5?

    Thanks!

Middle ages Dragon Slayer. Roasty and not for girlie girls . . . wait. . .

The body is full and smooth and the hop presence is unusually strong . It grew on me though. The roasted character is bold and dominant in the drink and not for the weak. This is not a terribly sweet beer. The sweetness it has though is ample to excite the nose. The bitter it has is sufficient to provoke the palate. It is as though they set out to tempt and then slay you.

    And . . . Bitches brew . . .

I loved this. The roasted flavors were simple and straightforward. In fact each characteristic seemed somewhat shy or timid on the nose until they came together in the drink for a fearless taste that's big and bold. Mouthfeel is creamy yet it has a bit of crispness because it isn't too sweet. Undaunted and delicious.

Please enjoy a great big bitter stout and don't be scared. :grinning:

I've always found Victory Storm King to be pretty roasty, as well as fairly bitter from the higher level of hopping, compared other imperial stouts.

@utopiajane I REALLY appreciate the recommendations, but I can't get my hands on Dragonslayer very easily, and Bitches Brew doesn't really sound like what I am looking for as it has honey and gesho...

I honestly haven't tried Storm King, so I will give it a sip, though I have not been a huge fan of very hopped brews like Yeti.

If that's not your thing, I'd also suggest North Coast Old #38, Sierra Nevada Stout, Magic Hat Heart of Darkness, Deschutes Obsidian, or New Holland the Poet, a personal favorite of mine. Roasty, oatmeal-y goodness.

I really appreciate it, I haven't tried most of those. I have plenty of other BIG stouts hanging around, I'm just looking for an everyday roasty stout and any of those may foot the bill

Boulevard Dark Truth is a pretty good sub for Pt5 IMO

Yeah, I didn't include anything imperial, it seemed like you wanted something simpler, more everyday. The Poet blew me away when I tried it about a month ago, such a full body, tons of flavor, nice roastiness, a touch of chocolate, and only about 5% ABV. Cheers!

Sierra Nevada Stout for "straight-up stout;" since there's not much difference between stout and porter I'll throw Anchor Porter and Sierra Nevada Porter in there too. North Coast Old Rasputin for imperial stouts, though it's also rather hoppy. Boulevard Dark Truth is another option for imperial, plus it's also got the Belgian yeast thing going on for a nice fruity contrast.

Yeti is probably the most roasted stout of any sort I have had to date, but as you said it is also borderline over-hopped.

Yeti is roasty, ten fidy wasn't as roasty as previous years, but still roastier than some if you can find it on shelves still.

Marble's Oatmeal Stout is so deliciously dark and roasty. I still mourn its departure from our state shelves.

Deschutes Obsidian Stout fits the bill. I also think Odell's Cutthroat Porter is nice and roasty, albeit being a porter.

Thanks! Obsidian is a classic go-to and Cutthroat does have that roasted flavor I am looking for... I have 4 more of those to go through. I am looking for something similar in flavor to Cutthroat, but maybe a bit more robust

Definitely try Avery Out of Bounds Stout if you haven't yet- it's just what you are looking for, very roasty for an every day stout. I'll second the Old #38, too.

Although I like both Yeti and Storm King fresh, they both age VERY well. Kind of like American Barleywines aged well, the hops fade...though it does take time and patience! Here are some other incredibly roasty stouts......

    Hoppin' Frog Cleveland Crusher
    Hoppin' Frog Boris Van Wink
    Midnight Sun Moscow
    Founders Imperial Stout
    Bell's Expedition

I have espresso yeti and expedition aging right now in hopes of perfecting it for my palate  Dig FIS and will check the rest!

    I actually haven't! Thank you!!

Every time I have heard that Odell has a new stout coming out (i.e. when Lugene was being released, their last Woodcut offering, etc.), I have been hoping to it would be just that: a more robust, darker version of Cutthroat.

These guys don't bottle, but if you ever make it up to Fort Collins I'd recommend checking out some stouts and porters from Equinox, assuming they have them on tap at the time. For everyday drinking dark beers (i.e. stouts in 5-6% abv range), those guys put out some of my absolute favorites in this state. Their roasted factor is a huge reason why.
