That's a nice explanation. I definitely ran into a few types of 'doppio maltos' in Italy (essentially bock strength), and they ranged from pale to red to even stronger. I wonder how specific the robot would get in identifying where on the spectrum the subject beer lies.

It's like that Thing in the box years ago in the show The Addams Family- Robo Tongue exists on its own, brought out for special beer fraud investigations. CSI Beer Crimes Sensory Unit. Don't kid yourself, the future's leaving us behind.

There are several studies that link how various sensory inputs can affect other senses, especially related to flavor and aroma, but it is funny how your mention of appearance and flavor are similar. For example, one might remark that an IPA smells bitter, but bitter is a taste. The interviewees were associating an aroma with a flavor. I think this is more of a confirmation bias then anchoring though where possibly the interviewee had tasted a hoppy, bitter beer previously, remember what it smelled like and then because it smelled similar assumed it tasted bitter.

    I CAN TASTE THE RARE!

Agreed. I imagine that the consistency will be the biggest thing. We can all argue whether or nor Duvel is the quintessential Belgian Strong Pale Ale, but once we program the robot to use Duvel as the baseline, the robot should be able to say how close any other particular beer is to being Duvel.

Kinda like DNA, I imagine - this beer is a 99.5% match for Duvel

It would also be able to tell if and how much Duvell may vary batch to batch.

I'm thinking most BAs don't need a robot to taste beer; they need a robot to stand in line.

This is the first step to becoming self-aware.

"Why should I have to wait in line for 8 hours and not get a taste of Pliny the Younger myself!?"

Just too many opportunities on this one---

"So two robots walk into a bar..."

"Robot tongue!? I thought you said..."
