OK, I see all these posts about the Rochefort beers and was wondering...What would it be comparable to as far as the flavor profile? Looks damn tasty but I'm not into spicy beers. Help a brother out. Thanks.

When I had my quad tasting, I actually found Rochefort 10 to be closer in profile to Westvleteren 12 than I did St. Bernardus ABT 12 (which is brewed using the "old" Westy recipe). So that was odd. Also probably not much help.

Rochefort 10 is one of my all-time, top 3 favorite beers. I wouldn't consider it "spicy" at all. I think Chimay Blue is a pretty good substitute for overall profile. Others will surely site St. B, and while I don't think that's wrong, exactly, it wouldn't be my first comparison.

Like most Quads/BSDAs, it shares some commonalities with Dubbels, so if you've had Chimay Red, Westmalle Dubbel, etc., that can give you a bit of an idea (although those tend to have spices, although in a dry, vice hot, fashion). I don't know, man; it's a fantastic beer; just try one on a fresh palate.

There's definitely a 'spicy' element to it- coriander, to be exact, which I think plays beautifully against the dark malts and yeast profile. Something similar would be Pannepot, if you've had that one.

I found Pannepot to be the odd man out at my quad tasting. It was quite possibly the best beer of the bunch, but it had a noticeable chocolate profile, almost like a Belgian stout, that wasn't present in any of the other quads. I definitely didn't feel that it was a very similar profile to Rochefort 10. Then again, I've had R-10 a bunch of times, and Pannepot only at that tasting.

I've got a bottle of 2011 Pannepot in the cellar I need to revisit soon. Maybe a side-by-side is in order.

Yeah- Pannepot is definitely awesome. great velvety texture, too. It's probably my favorite.

I was just thinking in a broad sense, the spices with the dark malts, although in Pannepot the proportions are definitely different.

BTW- if you like quads with more of that dark malt character then try Kasteel Donker- it's even more promounced in that one.

Abt 12 and Westvleteren 12 would be the closest to Rochefort 10.

I was given a bottle a few years ago, that had a few years on it at the time - so good, one of the few that I pick up on a yearly basis for cellaring purposes.

On the topic at hand, Ive always much preferred Abt 12 to Rochefort and Westy. I find it much less boozy and more smooth and complex, especially as it ages. I think Westy and Roch 10 are very similar across the board.

I've also found this to be true in both seen and blind tests. Westy 12 and Rochefort 10 really stands out, and cannot really be compared fairly to any other beers.

Pannepot, Pannepeut og De Dolle would probably be the best substitutes IMO, but Chimay Bleue or Nøgne Ø Aurora Borealis would also do.

There is some spice notes, but I've found Rochefort 10 to be a rich malty quad with a subtle amount of dried fruit. Compared to Westy XII and Bernardus Abt 12 I've found it to have the more robust malt flavors of the 3.

I also agree with previous posts that if you have had Pannepot it is a decent comparison to Rochefort 10.

Pannepot is somewhere between a quad and an export stout, hence the choclatey malt character. It's a unique beer.

While I prefer Pannepot, there's something very special about the Rochefort beers.
I think they're pretty unique even among their Trappist brethren. There's more of a balsamic and raisin note than most others. I love it in small doses, but I pretty much have to split a 12oz or it overwhelms me.

I too am not a fan of spicy beers, even the inherent spice I get from anything brewed with Belgian yeast. I don't like most tripels for that reason. I don't get that flavor from Rochefort 10. It still tastes belgian, but in a more subtle, and incredibly delicious way.

I've got a handful of 2011 Rochefort 10s if you want to make it a fair comparison.

It has been a while since I had Rochefort 10 so I did a little bit of web surfing to ‘remind’ me on this beer. Below is something I found. My beer memory of Rochfort 10 is that it had a complex flavor profile but what I remembered most was dark fruit flavors (e.g., raisin, dried plums, figs, etc.). I have no memory of coriander.

Kudos to Michael (@TongoRad) for his refined palate.

    Cheers!

    “Ingredients

The most amazing thing about Rochefort 10 is the simplicity of the ingredients. Pilsner and caramel malts are used in conjunction with a variety of sugar syrups to form the base of the beer. Styrian Golding and Halletuer hops are used in decent quantities with a tiny amount of coriander added late in the boil. As with many Belgian beers we have the yeast to thank for the sheer complexity and intensity of flavours which really highlights that artistic nature of this beer.

    Tasting

Rochefort 10 pours a dark, stewed tea-like colour with a thick, off-white head as a result of the typically high carbonation found in Trappist beers. The aroma is this beers calling card with an astonishingly complex mix of dark fruits, caramels and very subtle spice notes from the coriander. The taste is incredibly smooth with plums, figs and sweet malt caramels that disguise the huge 11.3% ABV a little too well! Warming alcohols and a smooth malt finish make you wish the bottle would never finish. This is a truly exceptional beer that epitomises balance and complexity.”

The thing that I remember about Rochefort that sticks out from the rest is an almost nutty-like taste thats mixed in so well.

Abt. 12 was a little heavier than Rochefort 10 on the dark fruit notes to me.

Pannepot is also pretty solid, but lacks some of that alcohol heat that I pick up in Rochefort.

..better just drink a Rochefort :stuck_out_tongue:
