So, I've been eyeing this clone recipe for a while. Figured it's a good time to brew an oatmeal stout. I'm brewing it tomorrow, but wanted to see if anyone has brewed this clone out of BYO before?

My only concern is this seems like a lot of black roasted barley and chocolate malt. Combined, they are taking up around 16-17% of the grain bill. The BRB is around 8% of the bill if I'm doing my math correctly. Does this seem normal for the style? I just don't want a lot of the bitter, burnt ash flavors from using too much of the BRB.

    Thanks in advance

Compare the recipe to the Can You Brew It recipe. After a process failure involving whirlfloc they deemed it cloned

Man, wonder why the hell the amounts of roasted barley are so much less in 'can you brew it' (1.5%) compared to the BYO version (8%)? I've already got all the crushed grain for this recipe in a big bag, and I've definitely got around 8% of roasted barley in the grain bill... guess I'll just have to settle for what's in there cuz I really don't feel like tossing this grain and getting more

Does not seem like too,uch to me. That is if you like lots of roasted malts in a beer. I love it in stouts and have used more than the recipe calls for. Just depends on your taste and what the rogue brew tastes like. Good luck

I felt the same way about a BYO Obsidian Stout clone I brewed recently, it had like a pound and a half of black malt, which I felt was a lot, but it turned out great. I have done a handful of BYO clones, they have all turned out very close to the original FWIW.

IMO, 17% roasted barley and chocolate malt is WAY too much. Especially for a 6% beer.

Anxious to hear how it comes out, though.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up saying screw it and got a new grain bill around 4 this evening at my LHBS ha. 1.5% roasted barley this time around for 5.5 gal. I feel a lot better about brew day tomorrow. I'll save my other bag of grain and cut it with some more 2-row for a RIS or something down the road!
