Anyone care to try and mention examples? We have a great one here in IL, in Tim Kovac's Small Town Brewery in Wauconda, northwest sub of Chicago.

His Root Beer Beers are the real deal. Lots of reviews on Untappd.

Huebert Brewing in Oklahoma makes a Hard Root Beer, but it's been removed from BA since I reviewed it a while ago ("not technically a beer"?)...

And, yes, Tim's root beer is fantastic at both ABV levels. We just need some more reviews on here...

I actually have a recipe in the works for this, ill let you know how it tuns out. Are these boozy sodas, or actually beers created to mimic the flavor? I was aiming to do the latter

Tim (from Small Town) told me once how the whole process went down, but I can't for the life of me remember the particulars. From what I remember, real root beer is made basically like a spiced beer, but then the alcohol-producing part of things is either stopped early or bypassed altogether. His root beer just lets things progress as they would unimpeded (unless we're talking his NA root beer, of course...).

Something tells me the Huebert offering I mentioned above is more of a spiked "malt beverage" akin to, say, a Mike's root beer flavor, and I know those exist elsewhere...

Methinks Tim makes a very strong beer base with some botanicals and sugars, and then adds more after fermentation. I remember him telling me he uses a champagne yeast and (maybe?) distillers yeast in a matrix with a strong ale yeast to hit the 19.5%. Takes forever to get there though. I can imagine a bourbon or rye or rum barrelled version, yum.

Small Towns is the best Root Beer I've ever had. I did however make the mistake of doing about 5 Jager Barrels with at Root Beer. Trust me bad idea.

Damn, that sounds like a tasty idea! The next time I see him, I'm gonna bring up the idea of barreling that stuff. Something tells me he might be amenable to the rum barrel, given his propensity for using rum spices in his beers (I miss the Pirate Ale...)...

Appalachian Broad Street Barley Wine is very root beer-ish imo.

It's lookin' like we've got a fairly unique offering up here, eh, Jim? Can't wait for that bottling line ad label approval stuff to get sorted out: then the rest of the country can potentially get a taste...

Sam Adams made a beer a number of years ago called the 1790 Root Beer Brew. It was sold as part of a 4-pack of more-or-less "historic" styles. I loved this beer, although apparently no one else did. The bummer for me was that there was only one bottle of it per 4-pack, and I wasn't a huge fan of the rest of the selections. I should have gone to a place that sold singles and taken all of the Root Beer Brews out of the 4-packs. Is that a dick move? I guess so. But everyone hated the root beer brews anyway

Ever since that beer, I've had it in mind to homebrew a similar beer. Maybe a porter or dark ale with root beer flavors or something. Haven't created a recipe for it yet, so I would love to hear if anyone else has one.

I think root beer in general seems to be a very love it/hate it drink. Personally, I love it. But I can understand how it would be a tough sell commercially. I would love to try that Small Town one - have to keep my eye out for any opportunities.

No! I'm afraid if it gets bottled, bad things will happen. It will get outlawed by the nanny state .

    Yes, indeed.

Interestingly, it goes really well after their Apple Cider Beer....

Port Jeff Brewing on Long Island made a birch beer stout that I thought was mind-blowing awesome. I'd be darned if it didn't taste just ike rootbeer, save for the malt profile. Glad to see there are other similarly good varieties out there.
